New York, NY (Best E Casino) - The NHL announced the Western Conference reserves for the 2009 All-Star Game on Wednesday and the list included four of the top six scoring defensemen in the conference.
Among those tabbed as reserves for the All-Star clash, to be played on January 25 in Montreal, include defensemen Nicklas Lidstrom of Detroit, Sheldon Souray of Edmonton, Shea Weber of Nashville and San Jose's Dan Boyle.
Boyle leads all Western blueliners with 32 points, while Weber and Souray are tied for third with 28 points each. Lidstrom, meanwhile, ranks sixth with 27 points and will be headed to the All-Star contest for a 10th straight season and 11th time overall.
Of the West's top six scoring defensemen, only Detroit's Brian Rafalski will, as of now, not skate at the Bell Centre in late January. Rafalski is second with 31 points, while Chicago defenseman Brian Campbell is also tied for third in scoring with 28 points. Campbell was named a starter for the contest last Saturday, along with Scott Niedermayer of Anaheim.
With the three starters at forward for the West all being under the age of 24, the club got some experience on the bench Wednesday.
Six of the nine forwards added are 30 years of age or over. Joining Calgary's Jarome Iginla, Colorado's Milan Hejduk, Mike Modano of Dallas, Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk, Phoenix's Shane Doan and Keith Tkachuk of St. Louis will be a pair of 24-year-olds in Columbus' Rick Nash and Dustin Brown of Los Angeles. San Jose's Joe Thornton, 29, rounds out the group that includes starters Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews of Chicago and Anaheim's Ryan Getzlaf.
Ducks goaltender Jean-Sebastian Giguere is slated to start the game and will be backed up by Niklas Backstrom of Minnesota and Vancouver's Roberto Luongo. Luongo, though, is currently sidelined due to a groin strain and might not be ready for the contest.
Among those making their All-Star debuts are Boyle, Backstrom, Weber and Brown. Also, Luongo was born in Montreal and played minor league hockey there, while Souray returns to the Bell Centre after having played with the Canadiens from parts of 1999-2000 through the 2006-07 season.
