(Best E Casino) - The Maple Leafs and Senators haven't combined for many wins lately, but one of the clubs will pick up another victory this evening when Ottawa welcomes Toronto to Scotiabank Place for another edition of the Battle of Ontario.
The Maple Leafs are currently in the midst of a four-game losing streak and Ottawa's win its last time out put the brakes on a six-game slide. The Sens are last in the Northeast Division with just 18 points, while Toronto is just one point ahead.
Toronto beat the visiting Sens, 3-2, in the first of six meetings between the clubs back on October 25. The Leafs have posted victories in five of the last six encounters in the series, but, despite winning their last two in Ottawa, they've still dropped four of seven at Scotiabank Place.
Another defeat tonight would give Toronto its second five-game losing streak of the season. The Leafs had three overtime losses in a five-game skid from October 11-21 and are just 0-3-1 during the current slide.
Toronto's most recent setback came Tuesday as visiting Atlanta earned a lopsided victory at Air Canada Centre. Todd White scored two goals while Johan Hedberg made 32 saves to lift the Thrashers to the 6-3 triumph.
Jeff Finger, Nik Antropov and Niklas Hagman scored for the Maple Leafs, who fell to 3-6-2 in the month of November. Curtis Joseph allowed six goals on 30 shots in the losing effort.
Meanwhile, rumors continue to swirl in Toronto that Brian Burke could be named the general manager of the Maple Leafs as early as Saturday. Burke resigned as Anaheim's GM earlier this month and speculation that his next job would be with the Leafs began immediately. Cliff Fletcher has been serving as Toronto's interim GM since John Ferguson Jr. was fired last January.
The Sens broke back into the win column on Saturday, posting an easy win over the visiting New York Rangers. Jesse Winchester and Daniel Alfredsson scored goals just over one minute apart in the second period, as Ottawa snapped its slide with the 4-1 decision over the Blueshirts.
Alfredsson extended his point streak to five games and has two tallies and three assists over that stretch.
Jason Spezza and Nick Foligno also netted a goal apiece for the Senators, who hadn't won since November 6 against Philadelphia. Ottawa had gone 0-4-2 in its previous six contests, including a 2-1 shootout loss to the Rangers on November 17.
Alex Auld made 18 saves and improved to 6-5-3 on the season. Despite the poor record, Auld has posted a solid 2.06 goals against average and .926 save percentage. He is expected to make his seventh straight start in this evening's contest.
Centerman Mike Fisher, who missed the last two games with a right knee injury, is expected to be back in the lineup for Ottawa tonight. Fisher has just two goals and four assists in 16 games this year after notching 47 points (23 goals, 34 assists) last season.
The Sens are 4-5-2 as the host this year and are ending a three-game homestand tonight.
Toronto is 4-5-1 as the visiting club this year and has dropped four of its last five road tests.
