(Best E Casino) - The
Buffalo Sabres have recorded a point in every game of the 2008-09 season and will try to continue that streak tonight when they welcome the
Boston Bruins for a Northeast Division battle at HSBC Arena.
Buffalo is 4-0-1 on the year with the lone setback coming its last time out in a shootout loss Saturday in Atlanta. Along with Montreal, Minnesota and Edmonton, the Sabres are just one of four teams remaining without a regulation loss this year.
Slava Kozlov scored the eventual game-winner in the final segment as the Thrashers edged Buffalo, 3-2, at Philips Arena.
Jason Pominville had a goal and an assist for the Sabres. Thomas Vanek had a goal in defeat and Patrick Lalime let in two goals on 37 shots to suffer the loss.
Vanek is off to a torrid start to the season, notching seven goals and two assists in his first five contests. He was also named the NHL's first star for the week ending October 19. However, Vanek had a chance to extend the shootout on Saturday, but the final shot went wide of the net, giving the Thrashers the victory.
Beginning with tonight's contest, the Sabres are playing four of their next six games on home ice. Buffalo is 2-0 in upstate New York this season.
The Bruins, meanwhile, have lost three of their last four games (1-1-2) and the latest setback came Monday evening to visiting Pittsburgh as Evgeni Malkin's goal in the fifth round of the shootout lifted the Penguins to the 2-1 decision in Boston's home opener.
The shootout was tied at 1-1 after Boston's Phil Kessel got a backhander over a sprawled Dany Sabourin in the first round, and Pittsburgh's Petr Sykora slipped a backhander past Tim Thomas in the second.
In the fifth round, Malkin skated in wide and faked once before snapping a quick shot into the left side of the net. Marc Savard had a chance to tie up the shootout again, but Sabourin sent the puck wide to seal the win for the Penguins.
Kessel had a power-play goal for Boston, which has lost three of four, while Thomas made 31 saves.
After this evening's road tilt, the Bruins will return home for a two-game homestand before finishing the month on a three-game swing. All told, eight of Boston's 11 games in October are on the road.
The Sabres have won two straight, three of four and five of the last nine meetings with Boston. The Bruins have not fared well in Buffalo recently, losing three of five and nine of their previous 12 tests at HSBC Arena.
