Ottawa, ON (Best E Casino) - Phil Kessel registered two goals and an assist, as the Boston Bruins doubled up the Ottawa Senators, 4-2, at Scotiabank Place.

Marco Sturm and Milan Lucic also scored for Boston, which earned five points on their opening four-game road trip. Marc Savard had three helpers and Manny Fernandez stopped 21-of-23 shots.

"We wanted to put a lot of shots at (Ottawa goalie Martin) Gerber tonight and take the game to them," Kessel said. "We worked hard and fortunately for us we were rewarded for our efforts."

Nick Foligno and Daniel Alfredsson each found the back of the net for the Senators, who have lost two of three. Dany Heatley had an assist, while Gerber allowed four goals on 27 shots in defeat.

"I don't think we were very crisp or sharp tonight, and I don't think we won enough battles, either," Alfredsson said. "We have to be better, especially in these division games."

It didn't take long for Boston to get on the board. Patrice Bergeron picked up a loose puck in the right circle and backhanded a shot that was initially saved by Gerber. Sturm, though, picked up the rebound in front of the net and stuffed it home for the first goal just 1:06 into the game.

Ottawa tied it up just seven minutes later, as Foligno found the back of the net thanks to Chris Kelly and Brian Lee.

The Bruins went back in front early in the second. Savard took the puck from behind the net and dished it cross-ice in front to Kessel, who took a quick shot, beating Gerber 4:47 into the period.

Kessel gave Boston a 3-1 lead on the power play later in the period. Zdeno Chara shot it into traffic from the point, and Kessel was able to lift it over a sprawled Gerber at 13:22.

The Senators climbed closer on a power play just two minutes later. After Jason Spezza was unlucky by hitting the post, Ottawa regained control of the puck and cycled it around to Alfredsson, who blasted a shot past Fernandez to climb to within one.

Boston put it away late in the third, going up by two with 5:17 to play. On a two-on-one break, Michael Ryder took it himself, but Gerber was there for the save. A rebound came out in front and Lucic easily put it in the back of the net.

"I thought our defensemen did a great job getting the puck up to our forwards, and we were able to attack with a lot of speed," Savard said. "This was probably our best game of the season so far."

Ottawa had several chances to score in the third but could not convert. The Senators outshot the Bruins, 11-5, in the final period and failed on their only power play chance of the frame.

Game Notes

The two teams have tied the season series, 4-4, in each of the past three seasons...Boston has won five of their past six games against Ottawa...The Senators were 1-for-5 on the power play, while the Bruins were 1-for-2.
