Tucker's Town, Bermuda (Best E Casino) - Padraig Harrington, the reigning British Open and PGA Championship winner, and Jim Furyk each posted rounds of two-under 68 on Tuesday to share the opening-round lead of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.
Retief Goosen managed an even-par 70 and Masters champion Trevor Immelman struggled to a six-over 76 at the Mid Ocean Club.
This event is reserved for the year's four major champions. Since Harrington won two and U.S. Open champion Tiger Woods is out after knee surgery, Furyk and Goosen were invited to join.
Harrington bolted out to an early lead thanks to a spectacular approach that hit the stick at No. 2. He holed a five-footer for birdie, then holed sensational par saves at four and six that reminded most of his epic putting in the final round of the PGA Championship.
The Irishman had no luck at the par-four eighth. He pulled his drive into the trees on the left and took an unplayable lie and returned to the tee. Harrington ended up converting a seven-footer for double-bogey to fall down to plus-one.
Furyk was even through nine holes thanks to a pair of birdies and a pair of bogeys. His birdie putts at four and seven were quite easy. Furyk's approach at four stopped less than two feet away and he nearly holed his tee ball at the par-three seventh.
Furyk, who missed an easy birdie try at the 10th, reached two-under par at the par-five 11th. His second rolled to seven feet and the 2003 U.S. Open winner drained the eagle try.
From there, Furyk bogeyed the 14th, but birdied the closing hole from six feet for his share of the lead.
"I think there were some opportunities," said Furyk. "I missed a few birdie putts, but also, made a couple good shots. My putts were pretty short. I would like to hole some longer putts, but it's difficult to get the speed of the greens."
Harrington, who lost a playoff last year to Angel Cabrera, recovered from the mistake at the eighth with some fine play on the back nine.
He birdied 14, 16 and 18 to match Furyk at minus-two.
"Obviously I started out playing well and finished off playing well," said Harrington. "Middle of the round, I didn't play so well, but putted very well. All that, two-under par, I'm quite pleased with that."
There will be 18 holes on Wednesday.
