(Best E Casino) - A pair of clubs riding two-game winning streaks get together tonight, when the
Houston Astros welcome the
Atlanta Braves to town for three straight contests at Minute Maid Park.
The Astros have won two straight, three of four and four of their last six games, including Thursday's 8-6 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in the finale of a three-game series. Staff ace Roy Oswalt improved to 23-1 lifetime against the Reds after he pitched six innings of one-run ball, allowing just two hits while walking three batters and striking out three.
Oswalt also went 2-for-3 with an RBI at the plate for the Astros, who still trail both Milwaukee and New York by 3 1/2 games in the NL Wild Card standings. The Astros, whose last playoff appearance was 2005, have three games left with Atlanta and will also host a make-up game with the Chicago Cubs on Monday, if necessary.
Jose Valverde recorded his NL-leading 43rd save last night after getting two outs in the ninth. Michael Bourn had two hits and four RBI for Houston, while Kaz Matsui went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two walks in the win.
Brian Moehler gets the nod on Friday for the Astros and he is 11-8 with a 4.61 earned run average this season. Moehler has dropped back-to-back outings and is just 2-4 in his previous six trips to the hill. In his most recent performance, he was saddled with a loss for giving up five runs and five hits in just an inning of work last Saturday at Pittsburgh.
The right-hander is 1-5 with a 5.44 ERA in 13 career games (6 starts) against the Braves.
Atlanta has won two in a row and four of its last five games. In Wednesday's 10-4 pounding of the Philadelphia Phillies in the finale of a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park, Chipper Jones belted a pinch-hit three-run homer and Kelly Johnson extended his NL-best hitting streak to 22 games.
Jo-Jo Reyes started on the hill and allowed three runs in 3 1/3 innings of work in a no-decision. Buddy Carlyle then got the final two outs in the fourth inning to record the victory.
Toeing the rubber for the Braves on Friday will be Jorge Campillo, who is 8-7 with a 3.76 earned run average this season. He won his most recent start on Saturday versus the New York Mets, tossing six innings of two-run ball during a 4-2 victory at Turner Field.
The right-hander has never faced the Astros.
Atlanta won two of three games against Houston at home from July 4-6.
