(Best E Casino) - After finally putting an end to a painfully-long losing streak on Tuesday, the
Seattle Mariners will aim for back-to-back wins over the American League West champion
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim when the teams continue their series tonight at Safeco Field.
Seattle stopped a string of 12 consecutive defeats, the club's longest slide since a franchise-record 14-game skid from September 2-18, 1992, with last night's 9-6 ousting of the Angels. The victory, at least temporarily, also delayed the Mariners' from recording their first 100-loss campaign since 1983.
Jeremy Reed snapped a 6-6 tie with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning, and Seattle went on to score twice more during the frame to earn its first victory since September 10.
Kenji Johjima collected three hits and knocked in three runs for the Mariners, while Yuniesky Betancourt finished 3-for-5 with two RBI. Reed and Wladimir Balentien both drove in a pair of runs on the night.
Roy Corcoran (6-2) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win, while J.J. Putz delivered a shutout ninth to notch his 14th save.
Mike Napoli clubbed a three-run homer and Gary Matthews added a two-run shot for the Angels, who had a five-game win streak snapped. Reliever Kevin Jepsen took the loss after being reached for three runs (2 earned) in two-thirds of an inning.
Despite Tuesday's setback, Los Angeles holds a two-game edge on Tampa Bay in the race for the best record in the AL, which would mean home-field advantage throughout the playoffs and World Series.
Seattle will now try to win consecutive tilts, something the team hasn't accomplished since a four-game win streak from August 29-September 1. The Mariners will have ace Felix Hernandez on the mound this evening, although the young phenom hasn't posted a victory in any of his last four starts.
Hernandez, who is 0-3 with a 4.05 earned run average during his drought, did pitch well enough to win Friday night in Oakland. The hard-throwing righty held the Athletics to two runs and fanned eight in an eight-inning complete game, but he received no offensive support in a 2-0 setback.
The 22-year-old had a no-decision against the Angels prior to that start. In that September 14 encounter at Angel Stadium, Hernandez allowed three runs over seven innings.
For his career, Hernandez is 3-4 with a 4.74 ERA in 11 lifetime starts against Anaheim.
The Angels send out Jon Garland, who looks to improve on an already strong career record against Seattle.
Garland is 8-3 with a 3.32 ERA in 15 lifetime games (14 starts) versus the Mariners, and he's 2-1 in three starts against Seattle this year. That includes a victory at the Big A on September 13, when the lanky right-hander delivered six innings of two-run ball.
The first-year Angel has won his last three decisions, although he was shelled in a start at Texas this past Friday. Garland was tagged for nine runs (8 earned) and 10 hits in just 2 1/3 innings against the Rangers, although he wound up with a no-decision.
The Angels have beaten the Mariners 12 times in 17 tries this season, including five of eight games held at Safeco Field. Anaheim has gone 11-6 in Seattle since the start of the 2007 campaign.
