Horned Frogs hope to hop past mighty Sooners

Norman, OK (Best E Casino) - One of only two teams to have defeated Oklahoma on its home field in the last decade, the 24th-ranked TCU Horned Frogs go after the second-ranked Sooners again this weekend.

TCU, which is 4-0 for the first time since 2003 and is tied for the nation's third-longest winning streak at seven games, is already 1-0 in Mountain West Conference play in 2008 after defeating New Mexico on the road, 26-3, in the season opener. Since then the squad has defeated Stephen F. Austin (67-7), Stanford (31-14) and most recently SMU by a score of 48-7 last weekend in Dallas.

As for the Sooners, they settled in for a bye last week after taking out Washington on the road by a score of 55-14 back on September 13th. The victory marked the third straight game to open the campaign in which Oklahoma has tallied at least 52 points, posting a 57-2 romp over Chattanooga in the opener and then a 52-26 triumph versus Cincinnati in Norman at the beginning of the month.

Oklahoma has taken six of the previous 10 meetings with TCU. However, the Frogs have won three of four contests played in Norman and took care of fifth- ranked Oklahoma in the season opener for both programs back in 2005 by a score of 17-10. That most recent win for TCU snapped what had been a 19-game home win streak for the Sooners and is the last time the team has been beaten at home. The only other home loss for Oklahoma under the direction of head coach Bob Stoops came against Oklahoma State. "It is a big challenge with a ranked team coming in here, and we understand that we have to be at our best," coach Stoops noted about the arrival of TCU.

Controlling the ball for more than 36 minutes, the TCU offense fired on all cylinders yet again last weekend as it blasted SMU and blew into the national rankings. Andy Dalton hit on 16-of-25 pass attempts for 210 yards and scored one TD on the ground, while Marcus Jackson threw for one touchdown and ran for another as he generated 115 yards rushing for a team that put up 271 yards on the ground.

Dalton, the starter for every game so far this season, is more than just a passer for the Frogs who has thrown just a single interception in 99 attempts. While he has yet to toss one into the end zone on any one of his 63 completions, Dalton has put together a streak of seven straight games with at least one rushing touchdown. Because of his efforts the Frogs are 12th in the nation in rushing (248.8 ypg), tied for 12th in scoring (43 ppg) and are second in turnover margin with a plus-3.0 per game so far. Not be overlooked is Joseph Turner who has a team-best six rushing TDs to this point in the season.

Before the Mustangs knew what hit them, TCU was up by 34 points midway through the third quarter which meant that the Horned Frogs were doing the job on both sides of the ball. The defense allowed just a single score in the contest on a four-yard touchdown pass. When it came to defending the run, TCU hit the Mustangs hard, resulting in minus-eight yards on 12 attempts. Cody Moore came up with four tackles for loss, two of which were sacks, while also posting one of the team's two interceptions as well.

Thanks to the huge effort to stall the SMU running attack, the Horned Frogs are now ranked first in the entire nation in run defense, permitting a meager 30.5 ypg. Factor in a pass defense that is surrendering only 152.5 ypg and TCU has the top overall defense in the entire country with 183 ypg given up. "Going into the season, we said we had to play better at safety and defensive end," was head coach Gary Patterson's reaction to having the best defense in the land during his weekly press conference. "We haven't given up the big play, and we've been able to get a pass rush."

Finding the top scoring offense in the nation begins and ends in Norman these days, with the Sooners putting up a gaudy 54.7 ppg. The unit has been so punishing that it has outscored opponents overall just with its total in the first quarter over the first three games (54-42) and most of the credit has to go to quarterback Sam Bradford who has been nearly perfect in his performance thus far. Bradford has converted an amazing 79 percent of his pass attempts for close to 300 ypg and already has 12 touchdowns to just two interceptions. Last season the signal-caller, currently second in the nation in pass efficiency with a rating of 214.43, had just two games where he failed to throw a touchdown and finished up with 36 TDs and a mere eight picks.

But more than just a powerful passing attack, the Sooners are also built to run with 217.7 ypg on the ground, which is third in the Big 12 and 18th nationally.

In addition to having the most powerful offense in the nation these days, the Sooners also have one of the best defenses. The squad is 10th in the country in allowing only 232.7 ypg and is second in the Big 12 and 20th in the nation in points allowed (14.0 ppg). However, a closer look inside the numbers shows a program that has faced some weak competition in Chattanooga, Cincinnati and Washington, teams that are a combined 3-7 heading into action this week. Of the three wins by those programs, two were against non-FBS programs in Eastern Kentucky and Cumberland, so having inflated numbers at this point in the season might be a bit deceiving on the part of the Sooners. Yet it is hard to argue with a squad that is first in the nation with 10 TFLs per game and second in sacks with four per contest.

While there's no guarantee it will happen, coach Stoops had to respond to questions about how his team would react to playing a close game against the Horned Frogs. "I think everyone is curious about that until they have done it. But I don't think we are any different from anyone else who has not been in that position yet. This week is going to be a big test heading into the conference next week."
