San Francisco, CA (Best E Casino) - J.T. O'Sullivan threw for 189 yards and two touchdowns on 16-of-23 passing, while Frank Gore tallied 130 yards on 27 attempts with a score and added four grabs for 32 yards to lead the San Francisco 49ers past the Detroit Lions, 31-13, in Week 3 action.

Delanie Walker caught three balls for 44 yards and found the end zone for the 49ers (2-1), who were coming off a 33-30 overtime win against the Seahawks. Isaac Bruce had two catches for 19 yards and crossed the goal line once.

Jon Kitna completed 15-of-30 throws for 146 yards, with a TD and an interception for the Lions (0-3), who were beaten 48-25 last week by the Packers. Rudi Johnson had 14 carries for 83 yards and added three receptions for 48 yards and a score. Jason Hanson hit on 2-of-2 field goals with a long of 51 yards, which gives him 35 career field goals of 50-plus yards.

After an unsuccessful first drive, the 49ers took over at the Detroit 49-yard line and drove the length of the field, highlighted by a 33-yard run from Gore, scoring on Bruce's six-yard touchdown reception. The score put San Francisco up 7-0 with 2:16 left in the first stanza.

Gore then capped a six-play, 53-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run that gave the Niners a 14-0 lead with 12:52 left in the first half.

"For whatever reason, coaches and players aren't executing properly," Lions head coach Rod Marinelli said. "It's some of the basic things that we're not doing a very good job in...so there are some fundamental things that we just, as a staff and players, did not get accomplished."

Hanson got Detroit on the board with a 44-yard field goal five minutes later, but San Fransisco got right back to it.

On the ensuing drive, O'Sullivan used three plays to get the team across the goal line: a 25-yard pass to Bryant Johnson, an 18-yarder to Josh Morgan and a 24-yard TD strike to Walker to make it 21-3 with 5:48 left in the half.

Hanson booted a 51-yard field goal with 1:43 left in the third quarter to make it a two-possession game, 21-6.

However, the 49ers answered on their next possession which bridged the third and fourth quarters. A 12-play, 77-yard drive that lasted 7:12 and saw O'Sullivan go 3-for-3 for 35 yards and concluded with a one-yard end around TD from Allen Rossum. The score put San Francisco on top 28-6 with 9:31 left in regulation.

"When we go out there and play, it is about making plays and taking care of the ball," said O'Sullivan. "It was a start and we need to just keep going in that direction."

Johnson broke a 34-yard TD run on Detroit's ensuing drive that lasted nine plays and saw the Lions move the ball 78 yards to the end zone. The score brought the difference to 28-13 with 6:57 left in the game.

The onside kick attempt went right to San Francisco's Arnaz Battle, who returned it 28 yards to the Detroit 12-yard line. The team was unable to cross the goal line and Joe Nedney connected on a 25-yard field goal to make it 31-13 with 4:25 showing on the clock.
