Baltimore, MD (Best E Casino) - Ed Reed highlighted an outstanding defensive effort with a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown, as the
Baltimore Ravens used a dominant second half to upend the winless
Cleveland Browns, 28-10 in an AFC North tilt.
The Ravens' defense accumulated five sacks and three turnovers, yielding a stingy 169 total yards in a rather convincing victory. Rookie Joe Flacco hit 13-of-19 passes for 129 yards and two interceptions for Baltimore (2-0), which was coming off its bye week after being unable to play in Houston due to the effects Hurricane Ike had on the Gulf Coast area.
Willis McGahee ran for 64 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries before exiting early with a scratched eyelid. Le'Ron McClain carried the ball 17 times for 66 yards and two scores.
Derek Anderson was rattled relentlessly while under center for Cleveland (0-3), which has scored 10 points or less in all three games after last year being held to under 10 on just two occasions. Last year's Pro Bowl selection was picked off three times, connecting on a mere 14-of-37 for 125 yards and a touchdown and finishing with a passer rating of 22.9.
Jamal Lewis logged 77 total yards -- 56 on the ground -- against his former team, while Braylon Edwards was once again held to a pedestrian three receptions for 27 yards. Jerome Harrison accounted for the Browns' only touchdown on a 19-yard reception.
Trailing 10-7 at the half, Baltimore completely took over in the third quarter as the defense rallied behind the injury of starting safety Dawan Landry, who was carted off the field after diving helmet-first into Lewis' knee late in the second quarter.
Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis once again set the tone early in the second half, nailing Kellen Winslow across the middle just as the tight end had caught the ball, which popped into the air and into the arms of Chris McAlister.
The cornerback returned the interception to the Browns' 12 yard line, and several plays later McClain barreled into the end zone from the goal line for his first career TD at the 11:13 mark of the third.
The Ravens' defense again came up with a big play on the next drive, as perennial Pro-Bowler Reed picked off Anderson and darted into the end zone untouched from 32 yards away for a 21-10 Ravens lead.
Jim Leonhard continued Baltimore's defensive dominance, sacking Anderson on third down midway through the third quarter and forcing a punt, which he immediately returned to midfield.
The Browns were called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the return, giving the Ravens an even shorter field. McClain later capitalized on the mistake with a one-yard touchdown run with a little less than five minutes to go in a 21-point quarter for Baltimore.
Cleveland mustered a mere two first downs in the second half and took just one snap in Baltimore territory, which ended up being a sack by Terrell Suggs.
A 14-play, nine-plus minute drive for Baltimore in the fourth quarter didn't result in any points for the home team, but Samari Rolle's interception of Anderson inside the two-minute warning appropriately sealed the win.
The Ravens picked up decent yardage in two separate drives in the first quarter, but a 48-yard field goal miss from Matt Stover and a Flacco interception in Browns territory accounted for the scoreless opening 15 minutes.
D'Qwell Jackson had the pick for Cleveland and the Browns converted the turnover into points when Anderson hit Harrison for a 19-yard scoring hookup on the first play of the second quarter.
Baltimore took advantage of good field position caused by a short punt later in the frame. McGahee, in his first action of the season after sitting out Week 1 with a knee injury, finished off the seven-play, 43-yard scoring drive with a five-yard plunge at the 6:40 mark of the second.
The Browns worked their way down the field on the next drive, and Phil Dawson booted a 38-yarder through the uprights for a 10-7 lead at the half.
