Bronx, NY (Best E Casino) - Robinson Cano singled home the only run of the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the
New York Yankees a 1-0 victory over the
Baltimore Orioles in the penultimate game at Yankee Stadium.
Derek Jeter was hit by a pitch from Jim Miller (0-2) to start the bottom of the ninth and pinch runner Brett Gardner stole second. Bobby Abreu was walked intentionally before Alex Rodriguez beat out a potential double-play grounder.
Jamie Walker came on and struck out Jason Giambi before Xavier Nady was given an intentional walk to load the bases for Cano, who drove the first pitch he saw into center field to plate Gardner with the winning run.
"It doesn't feel good, but it's not broken," said Jeter about leaving the game after being hit by the pitch on the hand.
Mariano Rivera (6-5) notched the win with a perfect top of the ninth. Alfredo Aceves started for New York and tossed six innings of five-hit ball with three walks and three strikeouts.
The Yankees, who will close the historic ballpark with a Sunday night game against Baltimore, have won four in a row and are 7-2 on the final homestand. New York also avoided elimination from playoff contention, but still trails wild card-leading Boston by 6 1/2 games. The Yankees have seven games remaining, including three to close the season at Fenway Park.
"It's been a lot of fun this week and [Sunday] will probably be even better," Jeter added. "We're still trying to win games. We've been playing pretty good."
Brian Burres went the first seven innings for Baltimore and yielded just three hits with two strikeouts and no walks. The Orioles have lost four straight -- all by one run.
The Orioles ran themselves out of a potential run in the first inning when Brian Roberts led off with his 51st double of the season and was promptly doubled off second on a popped up bunt. Nick Markakis followed with a single.
"I thought the first inning was probably our best shot," said Orioles manager Dave Trembley.
New York had two on with one out in the fourth, but Giambi struck out and Nady popped up. The Orioles then got a pair of two-out walks in the fifth, but Roberts lined out to right field.
