Tempe, AZ (Best E Casino) - UNLV's Malo Taumua broke through the line of scrimmage and blocked Thomas Weber's attempt at a game-tying field in the game's first overtime, as the Rebels pulled out a 23-20 upset over the 15th- ranked Arizona State Sun Devils.

Omar Clayton passed for 191 yards on 19-of-31 passes and connected on two touchdowns with Phillip Payne, while Frank Summers rushed for 103 yards on 22 carries for UNLV (2-1), which equaled its win total in each of the past three seasons.

Rudy Carpenter threw for 242 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, while Kyle Williams brought down three balls for 115 yards and a touchdown for Arizona State (2-1), which seemingly fell victim to looking ahead to next weekend's matchup against second-ranked Georgia.

Trailing 20-13 with three minutes left in the game, the Rebels took the ball at their own 26-yard line and drove right down the field. Clayton hit a sliding Payne at the nine-yard line on 4th-and-4 at the 18 with a minute left, and Payne was once again the target two plays later, making a superb one- handed catch while falling to his back in the end zone to send the game to OT.

The Rebels got the ball first in overtime and though Clayton brought them down to the three, they came away with just a 20-yard Kyle Watson kick. ASU would not gain a first down on its possession, and Taumua forced his way up the middle to get a hand on Weber's 35-yard attempt, sealing one of the program's biggest victories.

Arizona State went right down the field on the game's opening possession, but stalled after getting inside the five-yard line and settled for a 20-yard Weber field goal.

That was the only score of an otherwise defensive struggle in the opening period. UNLV finally broke through midway through the second thanks to 12 and 18-yard completions from Clayton, paving the way for a 44-yard kick through the uprights from Ben Jaekle that tied the game at the 7:09 mark,

ASU answered right back, as Carpenter hit Williams on a 42-yard gain on the first play of the next possession, and Chris McGaha capped the drive with a 22-yard TD catch.

Carpenter's interception deep in his own territory late in the first half gave the Rebels great field possession. On 3rd-and-goal from the two, Clayton hit Payne to tie things at 10 apiece with 33 seconds left in the half.

A huge 24-yard catch from Williams, though, allowed the Sun Devils to take the lead at the break, as Weber booted a 49-yarder just as the first-half clock expired.

After UNLV went three-and-out on their first possession of the second half, Williams came calling again, hauling in a 49-yard strike from Carpenter for a 10-point lead.

The Rebels marched down the field to start the fourth quarter, converting three third-down conversions. The underdogs had four downs to punch it in from the four-yard line but failed to do so, and on the 18th play of the drive, which took 9:16 to complete, Watson nailed a 20-yarder to make it a 20-13 game.
