Young nearly perfect as Padres pound Brewers

Milwaukee, WI (Best E Casino) - Chris Young lost his bid for a perfect game on Gabe Kapler's solo homer with two outs in the eighth, but held on for his first career complete game as the San Diego Padres routed the Milwaukee Brewers 10-1 in the finale of a four-game set.

Holding a 10-0 lead and only four outs away from the 18th perfect game in major league history and the first since 2004, Young surrendered the homer to Kapler. The no-doubt-about-it blast went into the stands down the line in left, Kapler's eighth, ending Young's bid for a perfect game, no-hitter, and shutout.

Young (5-5) struck out five and gave up two hits while throwing just 96 pitches. Kevin Kouzmanoff homered, drove in two runs and scored twice, and Chase Headley also homered and scored twice for the Padres, who forged a split in the series.

"His fastball was not overpowering at 86 miles per hour," said Brewers manager Ned Yost of Young. "But you've got a guy that tall throwing straight downhill, and a lot of deception on it, we just kept popping it up."

Manny Parra (10-7) gave up six runs -- only one earned -- on six hits in five innings. The Brewers' shoddy fielding continued to hurt them, as they committed two costly errors in a five-run third inning for the Padres. Milwaukee has lost five of seven, and failed to take advantage of the simultaneous stumbling by NL Central-leading Chicago, which lost again on Sunday and holds a four-game lead over the Brewers.

Milwaukee's lead over Philadelphia in the NL wild card race stands at four games as the Phillies split a doubleheader against the Mets in New York on Sunday.

After Young gave up Kapler's long ball, he snared a Bill Hall liner to end the eighth. Pinch-hitter Mat Gamel doubled to right with one out in the ninth, but Young came back to strike out pinch-hitters Angel Salome and Alcides Escobar to nail down the complete game.

"It was one of these days where everything hit was right at our guys," said Young, who gave credit to catcher Nick Hundley.

"One of the three times I shook him off, I gave up a homer. I learned my lesson," said Young.

The Padres took advantage of two Milwaukee errors to plate five runs in the third. Young helped himself with a one-out double to center, and a J.J. Hardy miscue allowed Mike Antonelli to reach before Chip Ambres walked to load the bases.

An error by Hall at third on a dead double play grounder by Kouzmanoff allowed Young and Antonelli to score, and Adrian Gonzalez followed with a two-run single to center. Will Venable's RBI single to center later in the frame posted the Padres to a 5-0 lead.

Headley's solo homer to right with one out in the fifth, his ninth, pushed San Diego to a 6-0 advantage.

While Young flirted with perfection, the Padres added four more runs in the seventh. Kouzmanoff led off the frame with a homer to left, his 21st, and Hundley's sacrifice fly added another run. Sean Kazmar's ground-rule double plated the ninth run for San Diego, and Young added a sac fly for good measure and a 10-0 lead.

Game Notes

The double for Young was the fourth of his career...Gamel's double was his first career hit...The Padres are one of four major league teams to have never thrown a no-hitter, along with the New York Mets, Colorado Rockies, and Tampa Bay Rays.
