San Diego, CA (Best E Casino) - Cole Hamels got his first win in a month and a half to help the Philadelphia Phillies take a 2-1 win in the conclusion of a three-game series against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

Hamels (10-8) gave up just one run on seven hits with three strikeouts and no walks in eight innings of work. It was the first win for the lefty since defeating Atlanta on July 3. He had gone 0-3 in his previous seven starts.

Jayson Werth had an RBI and Pat Burrell hit his second solo home run of the series for the Phillies, who finished a seven-game road trip with just two wins and five losses.

"We battled, it was a standoff," said Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel. "Hamels pitched a good game. They're guy threw good and threw strikes, but Hamels threw good and threw a lot of strikes also."

Philadelphia remains two games back of the New York Mets, who defeated Pittsburgh, 4-0, on Sunday, for first place in the NL East.

Cha Seung Baek (4-8) gave up just two runs -- one earned -- on four hits over six innings of work, but dropped his second straight start. Chase Headley drove in the lone run for the Padres, who have dropped four of their last six.

"You know it was a well pitched game on both sides," said Padres manager Bud Black. "You know our bullpen did a nice job. Hamels just did a better job."

The Phillies got a run in the first thanks to Jimmy Rollins, who led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on the errant throw to second and crossed the plate on a sac fly from Werth.

Burrell gave the Phillies another run in the sixth as he belted a solo home run into the left field seats with one out in the frame for a 2-0 lead.

Hamels, meanwhile, cruised through the first five innings. He retired the Padres in order in the first and fifth and only allowed three baserunners with none of them reaching second.

The Padres got to Hamels, though, in the sixth. With two outs, Kevin Kouzmanoff singled to right and Adrian Gonzalez followed with another single. Headley then dropped a single just over the reach of a leaping Rollins to bring home Kouzmanoff to make it a 2-1 game.

Hamels got into a bit of a jam in the seventh as he gave up consecutive one- out singles, but he then induced a grounder from Scott Hairston and the Phils turned the double play to get out of the inning.

Hamels threw a 1-2-3 eighth inning while Brad Lidge worked around a two-out walk in the ninth to pick up his 30th save of the season in as many opportunities.
