Pittsburgh, PA (Best E Casino) - Two days after losing backup quarterback Charlie Batch to a broken right collarbone in the team's first preseason game, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed quarterback Byron Leftwich to a contract Sunday. Batch is scheduled for surgery on Monday, as the team has yet to determine his return date. Because of Batch's unknown status, the Steelers inked Leftwich, who was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars as the seventh overall pick in the 2003 draft. The 28-year-old was released by the Jaguars before last season, and the oft-injured quarterback signed with the Atlanta Falcons, where he played just three games while throwing for 279 yards on 32-of-58 passing. In 49 career games, Leftwich has thrown for 9,321 yards, 52 touchdowns and 38 interceptions while completing 58.6 percent of his passes. The Steelers also signed veteran punter Mitch Berger, who has a career 43.1- yard net average on 730 punts for five different teams. In order to make room on the roster for the two additions, Pittsburgh waived wide receiver Garran Walker and linebacker Anthony Trucks.
