For the Rockies, right-hander Aaron Cook looks to continue what's already been his best season in the majors, in which he's already won five more games than he had in any other year.

The Kentucky native earned wins 12, 13 and 14 from July 20-30 before dropping a 9-4 decision to Washington in his last outing on August 4, when he allowed 11 hits and five earned runs in 5 2/3 innings.

Cook is 10-3 in 18 lifetime games -- 16 starts -- against the Padres, including a 4-0 masterpiece on July 1, when he went the distance and scattered five hits while walking none and striking out four.

For San Diego, right-hander Greg Maddux looks for his third straight win after ending a career-long 14-start winless streak.

He stopped the skid with an 8-5 defeat of Arizona on July 28, then made it two in a row with a 4-1 beating of San Francisco on August 3. In the two games, he combined to allow 11 hits and five runs in 11 innings.

Maddux last faced the Rockies on June 30 in Colorado, where he was nicked for eight hits and eight runs in 4 2/3 innings while getting a no-decision in the Padres' 15-8 triumph.

Lifetime against Colorado, he is 15-8 in 29 starts with a 4.29 earned run average in 186 2/3 innings.

On Friday, Garrett Atkins had three hits and drove in three runs as the Rockies downed the Padres, 6-3.

Ian Stewart clubbed a two-run homer for the Rockies, who had lost three of their last four coming in. Clint Barmes was 2-for-4 and knocked in a run, while Matt Holliday walked three times and scored twice.

Glendon Rusch (5-3) gave up two runs on seven hits and struck out three over six innings to pick up the win. Rusch has won four straight decisions and hasn't suffered a loss since May 31 against the Chicago Cubs.

Kevin Kouzmanoff registered three hits for San Diego, which has dropped seven of its last nine contests.

Brian Giles, who blocked a deal that would have sent him to the Red Sox prior to the game, added a solo homer. Boston claimed Giles off waivers earlier this week, and had until a set time on Friday to work out a trade with San Diego.

Jake Peavy (8-8), who entered play with an NL-best 2.59 earned run average, picked up the loss after he allowed three runs on five hits while walking five and fanning three in six innings.

Colorado has won six of 10 against San Diego this season.
