Chicago, IL (Best E Casino) - Nick Swisher's three-run homer in the bottom of the 14th inning lifted the
Chicago White Sox to a 10-8 win over the
Detroit Tigers in the opener of a three-game set from U.S. Cellular Field.
Detroit had taken the lead in the top of the 14th. Edgar Renteria led off the frame with a single and, one out later, Placido Polanco launched the first pitch he saw from Matt Thornton over the left-field wall for an 8-6 Tigers lead. However, the White Sox came back in the next frame off Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya.
Orlando Cabrera had a lead-off single and Carlos Quentin ripped a one-out double to right. Renteria's fielding error on Jermaine Dye's grounder allowed Cabrera to score. After Jim Thome went down on strikes, Swisher connected on a 2-1 fastball and deposited the offering over the center-field wall to win the game in dramatic fashion.
Chicago starter Gavin Floyd was touched for five runs on eight hits in four- plus innings. Thornton allowed two runs in three innings of relief and Adam Russell (4-0) recorded the final two outs in the 14th to get the win.
Quentin finished 4-for-7 with a solo home run and Paul Konerko added a two-run shot for Chicago, which opened a 10-game homestand by winning for just the third time in its last nine contests. Alexei Ramirez had three hits, including a solo homer. Ken Griffey Jr. was 1-for-6 with three strikeouts in his home debut.

Polanco clubbed a pair of two-run homers and tripled for the Tigers, who have dropped five straight. Ryan Raburn went 4-for-6 and knocked in a run, while Curtis Granderson belted a two-run homer to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.
Detroit starter Nate Robertson allowed four runs on nine hits over five-plus innings. Fernando Rodney struck out five in three scoreless innings of relief. Zumaya (0-1) was saddled with the loss after he surrendered four runs -- one earned -- in two-thirds of an inning.
The Tigers raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Granderson walked to begin the game and stole second before Polanco crushed his fifth home run of the season.
Chicago got a run back in the third on an A.J. Pierzynski RBI groundout.
Renteria opened the fifth with a double and Granderson followed with a shot over the right-field wall for 4-1 Tigers lead. Polanco then tripled and scored on an RBI single by Carlos Guillen. Ehren Wassermann came on in relief of Floyd and, after Guillen was caught stealing, Magglio Ordonez beat a out a grounder to third. One out later, Gary Sheffield walked before Raburn lined a single to right, allowing Ordonez to cross the plate for a 6-1 game.
Quentin's RBI single in the bottom half trimmed the deficit to 6-2 and the White Sox inched closer in the sixth as Konerko followed a lead-off double by Thome with a blast to the seats in left.
Quentin's AL-leading 29th home run of the season -- a two-out shot just past the glove of a leaping Raburn in left -- made it a 6-5 game in the seventh.
Ramirez's solo homer off Kyle Farnsworth with two outs in the eighth tied the game at six.
