Chicago, IL (Best E Casino) - The Chicago Cubs activated closer Kerry Wood from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday and designated pitcher Scott Eyre for assignment. Wood has not pitched since July 11 and was placed on the DL July 24 with a nagging blister on his right index finger. The 2008 All-Star is 4-2 this season with a 3.02 earned run average in 44 appearances, thriving in his first year as the team's closer by posting 24 saves in 29 opportunities. The club is expected to ease the righty back into the closer's role. Through his 10 years in the majors -- all with Chicago -- the oft-injured righty has amassed a 76-59 record with 24 saves and a 3.64 ERA in 255 games (178 starts). Wood's 1,378 strikeouts rank third in club history. Eyre, 36, was 2-0 with a 7.15 ERA for the Cubs this season in 19 relief appearances. He set a franchise record with 33 consecutive scoreless appearances from August 16, 2007-June 13, 2008, covering 23.2 innings, but has been limited due to two separate stints on the DL this season. A veteran of 12 MLB seasons, Eyre holds a 23-29 mark with a 4.42 ERA and four saves in 556 career games with the White Sox, Blue Jays, Giants and Cubs.
