(Best E Casino) - Mike Hampton takes another crack at earning his first major league victory in three years when the always-injured hurler takes the mound for the
Atlanta Braves in tonight's test with the
San Francisco Giants from AT&T Park.
Hampton made his first appearance in the majors since August 19, 2005 when he started Atlanta's 10-9 loss at Philadelphia on July 26. The left-hander was understandably rusty on that day and wound up with a no-decision after giving up six runs in four innings.
He returned to action Thursday against St. Louis and worked five innings in the Braves' 9-4 triumph. Hampton allowed four runs and walked four while throwing 81 pitches, although he did not factor in the decision.
Hampton missed the entire 2006 and 2007 campaigns, as well as the first half of this season, due to an assortment of injuries that included reconstructive elbow surgery. The two-time All-Star last won in the majors on August 14, 2005.
The 35-year-old tries to break his winless drought against a team he has enjoyed success against over the course of his up-and-down career. In 24 lifetime games (21 starts) against San Francisco, Hampton is 13-4 with a 3.66 earned run average.
The Braves will be attempting to even this three-game set after suffering a 4-2 setback to San Francisco in Monday's opener. Matt Cain pitched 6 2/3 solid innings and Randy Winn finished 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Giants to their third win in their last four games.
Cain (7-9) yielded just one run and five hits while striking out six batters before being removed with a three-run lead. Brian Wilson preserved the victory and notched his 31st save of the season with a perfect ninth.
Jair Jurrjens (10-7) took the loss for Atlanta after giving up four runs (3 earned) and nine hits over the first six innings.
Omar Infante led the Braves, losers of eight of their last 10, by going 2- for-4 with an RBI single at the plate.
The struggling Jonathan Sanchez gets the assignment for the Giants tonight. The talented lefty endured a rough month of July in which he went 0-3 with an 8.57 ERA in five starts and issued 16 walks in 21 innings.
In his most recent mound trip, Sanchez allowed four runs and walked four in four innings of a loss to the rival Dodgers last Wednesday. The 25-year-old had an even shorter stay in his previous start, when he lasted just 2 2/3 innings and was roughed up for six runs during a July 25 defeat to Arizona.
Sanchez has never faced Atlanta in a starting role but made two relief appearances against the Braves last season. He took the loss in one of those games after being tagged for three runs in just two-thirds of an inning.
The Braves and Giants are meeting for the first time this season after Atlanta took four of seven games in the 2007 series. The clubs split four games in San Francisco.
