Seattle, WA (Best E Casino) - Raul Ibanez's grand slam highlighted a 10-run seventh inning, as the
Seattle Mariners rallied past the
Minnesota Twins, 11-6 in the opener of a three-game series from Safeco Field.
Ibanez finished 3-for-5 with six RBI and two runs scored for the Mariners, who have won two straight. Adrian Beltre and Jose Lopez also had three hits and a run scored, with Lopez driving in a run. Yuniesky Betancourt was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Seattle starter Miguel Batista was roughed up for six runs on seven hits in three-plus innings. Jake Woods pitched three scoreless frames and Roy Corcoran (2-0) got the win after tossing a 1-2-3 seventh.
Justin Morneau knocked in two runs and Nick Punto added a solo homer and scored three times for Minnesota, which lost for just the third time in its last 10 games and fell back into a tie with the idle Chicago White Sox for the top spot in the AL Central.
Glen Perkins was touched for five runs on 12 hits over 6 1/3 innings. Brian Bass (3-4) absorbed the loss after gave up two runs and did not retire a batter in the forgettable seventh.
Facing a 6-0 deficit, the Mariners authored an incredible rally that started in the sixth inning when they loaded the bases before an out had been recorded. Ibanez, Beltre and Lopez all singled before Jose Vidro grounded into a 6-3 double play, allowing Ibanez to cross the plate.
Seattle then struck for 10 runs in the seventh. Betancourt singled with one out and Ichiro Suzuki walked. Willie Bloomquist then singled to load the bases for Ibanez, who hammered a 1-0 fastball over the right-field wall for his seventh career grand slam.
Bass was called on from the bullpen and failed to retire a batter, serving up a double to Beltre and a run-scoring single to Lopez, which tied the game at six. Craig Breslow took over on the mound and a passed ball allowed Lopez to take second. One out later, pinch-hitter Miguel Cairo walked, resulting in another pitching change.
Matt Guerrier entered the game and pinch-hitter Jeff Clement drove in the go- ahead run with a single to right. Denard Span's throwing error put both runners in scoring position. Betancourt then beat out a dribbler to short, plating Cairo. On the play, Brendan Harris' throw eluded the first baseman, allowing Clement to score and Betancourt to move up to second.
Consecutive walks to Suzuki and Bloomquist loaded the bases for Ibanez, who ripped a two-run single for an 11-6 lead. Span tried to cut the runner down at third, but his wild throw bounced past Brian Buscher. Bloomquist broke for home, but was tagged out to end the inning.
Ibanez set a franchise record with six RBI in the seventh.
"That was a complete team effort that inning," Clement said. "To bang out that many runs and that many hits, it was a great come-from-behind victory and something that, hopefully, we can build off of these next two months."
Cesar Jimenez tossed a perfect eighth for Seattle and Mark Lowe repeated the feat in the ninth to close out the game.
"Two totally different parts to the ballgame," Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We played well and executed in the first half of the game and then Perkins, in the seventh, had some guys 0-2 and gave up a couple base hits and then just threw one right down the plate and gave up a grand slam. Then, you had the bullpen that came in and just gave up hits and had balls flying everywhere. Before you knew it, it was a 10-run inning. It was pretty disappointing."
The Twins got on the board in the first on Mike Lamb's RBI double, then scored three more times in the third. Punto led off with a home run to right. Minnesota loaded the bases on singles by Joe Mauer and Lamb sandwiched around a walk to Morneau, bringing up Delmon Young, who hit a sacrifice fly. Buscher's sac fly knocked in the Twins' fourth run.
Span doubled and Punto walked to begin the fourth. Woods was summoned from the bullpen and Mauer greeted him with a single to load the bases for Morneau, who ripped a two-run double for a 6-0 lead.
