Austin Kearns was 3- for-4 with a run scored while Pete Orr and Wil Nieves recorded an RBI apeice for the Nationals, who rebounded nicely in the series after matching a season-high, nine-game losing streak. Collin Balester (2-3) kept the Reds at bay for 5 1/3 frames, allowing one run on six hits and two walks. The young righty struck out five to pick up the win, his first in the last three decisions. Joel Hanrahan picked up his first career save despite allowing a run in the ninth. Hanrahan was named the closer after the Nationals dealt Jon Rauch to the Diamondbacks on July 22. Johnny Cueto (7-11) ran into trouble with a costly four-run first, three of which he was charged with, giving up seven hits and one walk while fanning four over six frames in extending his winless streak to five straight starts going 0-3 over that span. Joey Votto was 3-for-4 with a home run while Corey Patterson added two hits including a home run for the Reds, who have dropped eight of their last nine overall.

Ty Wigginton homered, doubled and scored twice for the Astros, while Hunter Pence and Darin Erstad each went 2-for-3 with a run batted in and a run scored. Carlos Delgado went 3-for-4 for the Mets, who are riding a four-game losing streak. Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran added two hits each, but New York was a dismal 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Geovany Soto was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored while Soriano's home run was one of three hits on the day. Johnson's pinch-hit two-run homer was the difference maker for Chicago, which has won seven of eight overall. Chad Gaudin (8-4) picked up the win despite allowing a game-tying two-run homer in the eighth. Andy LaRoche and Brandon Moss both hit their first home runs as members of the Pirates following the blockbuster three-way trade with the Dodgers and Red Sox that netted both players along with Craig Hansen and Bryan Morris. Hansen (1-4), however, was dealt the loss and was charged with the decisive earned run in tossing 1 2/3 innings. Ryan Doumit added two hits with an RBI and a run scored for the Pirates, who have now dropped three of their last four.
