San Diego, CA (Best E Casino) - Greg Maddux allowed just two hits over six brilliant innings, and the San Diego Padres topped the San Francisco Giants, 4-1, to avert a three-game sweep at Petco Park.

Maddux (5-8) held the Giants to a first inning run, striking out one without issuing a walk, to win his second straight start after a 14-start winless streak following his 350th career win May 10. Trevor Hoffman worked the ninth to nail down his 23rd save.

"We had a real tough time against Maddux," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "He had our number today, again. We couldn't do much. We got shut down."

Kevin Kouzmanoff homered for the Padres, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Brian Giles and Jody Gerut each collected two hits and scored a run.

Randy Winn had two of San Francisco's four hits and knocked in the lone run for the Giants, losers in six of their last nine. Kevin Correia (2-6) allowed two runs on three hits in 6 1/3 innings to take the loss.

With the game tied 1-1 in the sixth, the Padres forged ahead for good. A Giles double and two walks loaded the bases with one out before Nick Hundley brought in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly. San Diego had a chance for more, but Aaron Rowand made a diving catch to rob Luis Rodriguez on a sinking liner to center.

San Diego added insurances runs in the seventh and eighth. In the seventh, Gerut ripped a one-out double off Alex Hinshaw, and scored one batter later when Giles flared a single to left. Kouzmanoff's leadoff blast in the eighth extended the lead to 4-1.

"It was nice," Maddux said. "Bullpen did good. The bullpen pitched really good the last three innings, and we got a chance to add on, and it was good to see."

Hoffman allowed a leadoff single and a stolen base to Winn in the ninth, but Gerut made a brilliant recovery and diving catch when he misjudged Bengie Molina's liner to center, then Hoffman retired Rowand and John Bowker to end the game.

San Francisco picked up a quick run in the first, but couldn't add on. Emmanuel Burriss was hit by a pitch with one out, stole second and scored on Winn's single.

Maddux allowed just one more hit the rest of the way, and tied the game in the second with an RBI single to right.

Despite the loss, the Giants lead the season series 7-4. It was the first home win over the Giants for San Diego this season...Kouzmanoff's homer was his 15th of the season...The Giants were just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position...The Giants open a three-game home series with Atlanta on Monday, while the Padres are off Monday before traveling cross-country to open a three-game set with the New York Mets.
