Maddux shoots for consecutive wins against Giants

(Best E Casino) - It took Greg Maddux almost three months to win the 351st game of his career. The right-hander hopes it doesn't take as long for win number 352, as he leads the San Diego Padres against the San Francisco Giants this afternoon in the finale of a three-game series at Petco Park.

Maddux's victory on May 10 was the 350th of his career, but the combination of little run support and some poor outings had him to winless over the next 14 starts. He finally got back in the win column on Monday, beating Arizona behind five innings of four-run, nine-hit ball.

The 42-year-old is now 4-8 with a 4.29 ERA in 23 starts this year, but has a solid 2.84 ERA in 12 home games this season. However, he is only 2-3 at Petco Park this year.

Maddux has excelled in his career against the Giants, going 29-14 against them with a 2.81 ERA and five complete games in 52 starts. He is 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA in three starts against San Francisco this year.

The Padres hope Maddux can help them halt a four-game losing streak and avoid getting swept at home by the Giants for the first time since March 31-April 2, 2003.

Not even a solid outing from ace Jake Peavy was enough in yesterday's game. Peavy (8-7) was the hard-luck loser as he yielded only a run on five hits over seven innings, but got no support in a 2-0 loss. Brian Giles had two of the three hits for the Padres.

Barry Zito, meanwhile, was brilliant on the hill to lead the Giants. Zito (6-13) scattered three hits over his eight frames of work while fanning five and walking four. Brian Wilson tossed a perfect ninth to notch his 30th save.

Fred Lewis was 2-for-4 and scored a run for the Giants, who have won two in a row and three of their last five. Bengie Molina and Emmanuel Burriss both knocked in a run.

Kevin Correia goes for the Giants and had gone 10 outings without a win (0-4) before defeating the Dodgers on Monday. The right-hander allowed six runs (4 earned) on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings of a 7-6 victory, his first since April 10.

Correia, who is 2-5 with a 5.80 on the season, is 1-0 with a 4.44 ERA in 15 games, including three starts, in his career vesus the Padres.

The Giants have won seven of 10 versus the Padres this year, taking all four tests so far in San Diego just one year after the Padres won 14 of 18 versus San Francisco. That included wins in eight of nine as the host for San Diego in 2007.
