Seattle, WA (Best E Casino) - Jeremy Guthrie threw the first complete game of his career to help the
Baltimore Orioles to a 3-1 win over the
Seattle Mariners in the second of three games at Safeco Field.
Guthrie (8-8) gave up just one run on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts for the Orioles, who have won five of their last six. Aubrey Huff and Melvin Mora each had a pair of hits and drove in a run while Adam Jones went 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
"I've just seen the guy get better and better and better," said Orioles manager Dave Trembley about Guthrie. "I don't know where we'd be without him. Every time he pitches, you feel like you're going to win, it's that simple."
Raul Ibanez drove in the lone run while Felix Hernandez (7-7) was saddled with the loss for giving up two runs on eight hits in just five innings of work for the Mariners, who have dropped four of five.
"I don't like to throw five innings," said Hernandez. "I want to go out there longer, but it's not happening today. Guthrie threw an unbelievable game, he was outstanding. The last four starts I've thrown too many walks and too many balls, it's not good for me."
Baltimore struck in the first inning as Mora punched a two-out double to score Jones for a 1-0 lead.
The Mariners got the run back in the bottom of the first as Jeremy Reed hit a one-out double and Ibanez followed with a double of his own to tie the game.
The Orioles took the lead in the fourth. Mora led off with a single and, after Luke Scott flied out, Kevin Millar punched a single to center. Ramon Hernandez then roped a single to right to bring home Mora for a 2-1 lead.
Baltimore got another run across in the seventh. Jones beat out an infield single and Nick Markakis then drew a walk. Cesar Jimenez then took the mound and picked off Markakis at first, but Huff followed with a single to right to bring home Jones for a 3-1 lead.
After giving up the run in the first, Guthrie held the Seattle offense in check as he gave up just one hit, a two-out infield single by Jose Vidro in the fourth, from the second through the seventh innings.
In the Seattle eighth, Ichiro Suzuki made it to second base as he hit a grounder back to Guthrie that the pitcher threw away. However, it was with two outs that Guthrie got Jeremy Reed to fly out and end the inning.
Guthrie then retired Seattle in order in the ninth with Jay Payton robbing Jose Lopez of a potential home run with a leaping catch at the left field wall to end the game.
