(Best E Casino) - The San Francisco Giants have a winning record against the Padres this year, but also haven't faced Jake Peavy yet. The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner gets his first crack at San Diego's NL West rival tonight in the middle portion of a three-game set at Petco Park.

The Giants have won six of nine versus the Padres this year, taking all three tests so far in San Diego just one year after the Padres won 14 of 18 versus San Francisco. That included wins in eight of nine as the host in 2007.

Part of the Giants success can be attributed to the fact they had missed facing Peavy in each of the last three series. Tonight however, Peavy will face the Giants, a team he went 3-0 against last year with a 1.33 earned run average in three starts. The right-hander gave up just three earned runs in 20 1/3 innings versus San Francisco last year, fanning 17 batters.

He has a career record of 11-6 with a 3.27 ERA in 21 starts versus the Giants.

Peavy is 8-6 with a 2.67 ERA in 18 starts this season, as he missed some time due to a strained right elbow. He defeated the Pirates on Sunday, giving up just a run on four hits over seven innings while reaching double-digit strikeouts (10) for the second time this year. A high pitch count in that outing forced the Padres to give Peavy an extra day of rest, as he was slated to start last night's opener.

Sunday's outing wrapped a solid July for Peavy, as he went 3-1 with a 2.12 ERA and 35 strikeouts in five starts.

Barry Zito goes for the Giants, and his up-and-down season continued on Sunday versus the Diamondbacks. After going 2-0 with a 3.50 ERA in his three previous starts, Zito allowed six runs on six hits and five walks in a loss to Arizona, falling to 5-13 on the season with a 5.80 ERA. His 13 losses this year match his career high for a single season, set in 2005 with Oakland and matched last year in his first season with the Giants.

The 30-year-old left-hander is 1-2 with a 3.72 ERA in seven lifetime outings versus San Diego, all but one of them starts, and has a 3.75 ERA in three appearances at Petco Park.

San Francisco drew first blood in this recent series last night, winning 3-2 in extra innings. Eugenio Velez knocked in the deciding run and Fred Lewis finished with two hits and an RBI for the Giants, who won for the second time in their last six games.

Sergio Romo (1-1) picked up the win by holding San Diego off the board in the ninth, while Brian Wilson earned his 29th save despite a shaky final inning. Starter Tim Lincecum was stellar again despite a no-decision, scattering three hits and a run over seven innings with 11 strikeouts.

Adrian Gonzalez homered and Luis Rodriguez also drove in a run for the Padres, who have dropped three in a row. Trevor Hoffman (1-6) took the loss after surrendering the winning run in the 10th. Josh Banks allowed eight hits and two runs over seven frames in the start.
