Seattle, WA (Best E Casino) - Jay Payton's three-run triple highlighted an eight-run fifth, as the Baltimore Orioles pummeled the Seattle Mariners, 10-5, in the opener of a three-game set at Safeco Field.

Garrett Olson (8-5) allowed three runs on 11 hits over a career-high 8 1/3 innings to collect the win for Baltimore, which has won four of its last five games.

Nick Markakis finished 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI for the Orioles, who pounded out 16 hits. Adam Jones drove in two runs, while Brian Roberts went 2- for-4 with a walk. Kevin Millar was 2-for-3 with two walks and a run batted in.

Jarrod Washburn (5-10) was saddled with the loss as he was touched for six runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings. Ray Corcoran gave up four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings of relief.

"I wasn't missing by much, but I was missing by just enough to either get me behind in counts, or get enough of the plate where they could put a good swing on it," Washburn said. "It wasn't a good night at all for me."

Ichiro Suzuki and Willie Bloomquist each had two hits and knocked in a run for Seattle, which has dropped six straight games at home. The Mariners registered 15 hits, all singles.

Baltimore entered the ninth with a comfortable 10-0 lead and Olson in search of his first career shutout. The southpaw gave up a lead-off single to Adrian Beltre. After pinch-hitter Jamie Burke popped out, pinch-hitter Jeff Clement and Miguel Cairo stroked consecutive hits to load the bases.

Olson was then lifted in favor of Lance Cormier, and Kenji Johjima beat out a slow roller to the shortstop to put the Mariners on the board. Jeremy Reed sliced an RBI single to right and a groundout by Suzuki plated another run. Bloomquist and Bryan LaHair each reached on infield singles to trim the deficit to 10-5 before Beltre, the 10th man to come to the plate in the inning, lined out to end the game.

Baltimore jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on Markakis' RBI double.

In the fifth inning, 12 Orioles went to bat as they broke the game open with an eight-run surge. After Roberts singled to begin the frame, Jones grounded into a 5-4-3 double play. Three consecutive singles by Markakis, Aubrey Huff and Melvin Mora brought in a run. Ramon Hernandez then ripped an RBI double and Millar walked to load the bases.

Corcoran was called on from the bullpen and Payton greeted him with a bases- clearing triple. A single from Juan Castro scored Payton before Roberts doubled and Jones ripped a two-run single for a 9-0 lead.

"It was a good inning, we got on a little roll," Payton said. "Everybody just kept getting hits, pushing some runs across. It was pretty much the difference in the ball game."

Millar added an RBI single in the eighth.

Game Notes

The Orioles are 7-1 against the Mariners this season...Huff left the game with a slight contusion on his head...Seattle's Jose Lopez went 2-for-3, extending his hitting streak to a career-high 19 games. To make room for Cintron, the club optioned pitcher Brian Burres to Triple-A Norfolk...Baltimore pitcher Daniel Cabrera has elected to appeal his six-game suspension handed down by the league for intentionally throwing at the head of New York third baseman Alex Rodriguez during the eighth inning of Tuesday's 7-6 victory over the Yankees...Baltimore's Jeremy Guthrie (6-8) and Seattle's Felix Hernandez (7-6) are scheduled to start on Saturday.
