Bronx, NY (Best E Casino) - Aubrey Huff tied a career high with four hits and the
Baltimore Orioles hung on for a 7-6 victory over the
New York Yankees, in the middle contest of a three-game set from Yankee Stadium.
Daniel Cabrera (7-6) allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out two in seven-plus strong innings before being ejected for a high and inside pitch that hit Alex Rodriguez.
Huff drove in four runs and scored twice with a home run and a double while Kevin Millar added a solo blast for Baltimore, which has won three in a row. Nick Markakis and Melvin Mora had two hits each with Markakis adding two runs scored while Mora had two RBI.
Darrell Rasner (5-8) pitched six-plus innings giving up four runs on eight hits and three walks with just one strikeout for the Yankees, who have lost three consecutive games after winning eight in a row.
Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with a solo home run while Robinson Cano and Jason Giambi each had two-run singles.
"We came up one run short and that's unfortunate because we kept at (Sherrill)," Girardi said.
Mariano Rivera worked the ninth for New York, giving up Huff's solo home run, in pushing his career innings pitched mark to 1,000 1/3.
Baltimore broke the game open in the seventh on Huff's, bases-clearing double off Damaso Marte, who relieved Rasner after Brian Roberts reached with a single and Adam Jones was hit by a pitch. Markakis then greeted Marte with a single before Huff's hit. Mora followed with another double to score Huff and make it 6-1 O's.
Cabrera, who has fared well at Yankee Stadium taking a no-hitter into the ninth on September 29, 2006, was ejected in the eighth for hitting Rodriguez with a shoulder high pitch after a Bobby Abreu leadoff double. No warning had been issued to either team before the ejection, which Orioles manager Dave Trembley protested.
"It was tough because everybody in the whole stadium because they know that I didn't try to hit A-Rod," Cabrera said. "I was surprised because the game was 6-1. (I was trying to go) inside like all night long...I miss sometimes."
"I don't get involved in that (ejection.) I know it was awful high and it's dangerous when it's up high," Girardi said.
Jim Johnson relieved Cabrera and allowed back-to-back singles to Giambi and Cano. The latter base hit drove in Abreu and Rodriguez, who initially stopped at third but was able to make it home as Jones deliberately threw the ball to the infield.
Huff's homer in the ninth, his 22nd, gave George Sherrill a much-needed insurance run as he pitched a shaky ninth.
Johnny Damon led off with a single before Derek Jeter walked to set up an RBI double by Abreu. After a Rodriguez strikeout, Giambi hit a shot to center that bounced off the pitching rubber and into the outfield to score Jeter and Abreu. Justin Christian pinch-ran for Giambi and stole second before Cano and Wilson Betemit struck out to end the game.
Rasner looked as if he would have an easy first inning but the Orioles got singles from Markakis and Huff before Mora plated a run with an RBI single. Luke Scott walked but Millar popped out with the bases loaded to end the inning.
Millar then led off the fourth with a homer, his 16th, for a 2-0 lead.
Rodriguez, who served as the designated hitter while Betemit played third, finally got the Yankees on the board in the sixth with his 22nd blast on the season to dead center, cutting the lead in half.
