(Best E Casino) - The
Milwaukee Brewers have battled their way to the top of the NL Central standings and will try to stay there today, when they wrap up a three-game series versus the
Houston Astros at Miller Park.
Milwaukee is tied with the Chicago Cubs atop the division standings thanks to nine wins over its last 10 games. After having their eight-game winning streak halted with Friday's 3-1 loss to the Astros in the series opener, the Brewers responded by recording a 6-4 triumph last night.
Ryan Braun homered and drove in four runs, while Ray Durham doubled twice and scored three runs for the Brewers. Durham entered the game 0-for-6 with Milwaukee since being acquired in a trade with San Francisco last week. Corey Hart went 2-for-3 with a run scored in a winning cause.
Eric Gagne tossed a perfect eighth inning to win in relief of Dave Bush, who allowed four runs on nine hits in five frames. Salomon Torres worked a scoreless ninth for his 20th save of the season.
The Brewers will hand the ball to Jeff Suppan on Sunday, and he is 5-6 with a 4.65 ERA in 19 starts this season. Suppan is 1-0 over the past three starts with back-to-back no-decisions, including a July 22 outing at St. Louis. In the 4-3 win over the Cardinals, Suppan allowed three runs in seven innings.
The right-handed Suppan is just 2-6 with a 4.83 ERA in 13 career games, 12 of which have been starts, against the Astros.
Houston, meanwhile, has lost five of its last six games. In Saturday's loss in the second test of this series, Miguel Tejada stopped an 0-for-16 slump with a 4-for-4 performance and Carlos Lee belted a two-run homer. Lance Berkman and Hunter Pence each went 2-for-4 with a run batted in for the Astros, who lost centerfielder Michael Bourn in the sixth inning with a sprained right ankle.
Doug Brocail allowed two runs in the eighth for the loss after starter Brandon Backe allowed two runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. Geoff Geary was tagged for two runs in 1 2/3 innings of relief.
Randy Wolf will make his Houston debut after being acquired from the San Diego Padres on Tuesday. Wolf went 6-10 with a 4.74 earned run average in 21 starts with the Friars, but has lost two straight and six of his last seven starts.
Wolf last toed the rubber on July 19 at St. Louis, when he yielded six runs -- four earned -- and eight hits through 5 2/3 innings of work. The lefty, who is 1-6 as the guest in 2008, sports a 5-3 record and a 3.89 ERA in 14 career appearances against the Brewers.
The Brewers are 7-4 against the Astros this season, with a 5-0 record at Miller Park.
