Report: Favre will stay away for now

New York, NY (Best E Casino) - Brett Favre will not report to the opening day of Green Bay Packers training camp, according to Sports Illustrated.

The magazine's Web site reported that Favre has agreed to give Packers general manager Ted Thompson a couple of days to sort things out.

"I had planned on reporting for the start of Packers training camp Sunday, but Ted Thompson asked if I would give him a couple of days to try to get the situation resolved," Favre told SI. "I agreed to do that. I don't want to be a distraction to the Packers, and I hope in the next few days we can come to an agreement that would allow me to continue playing football."

In a season-opening press conference Saturday, Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy stated that Aaron Rodgers will be the starting quarterback.

"Aaron Rodgers is the quarterback for the Green Bay Packers," McCarthy said. "I've stated it over and over again, and I hope we can understand that. That's where I am as head coach of the Green Bay Packers."

McCarthy did say that Favre, who stated that he would like to resume his football career, could report to training camp along with the rest of the team and even be in uniform for the first practice Monday morning. But Favre would first have to file for reinstatement with the league, then pass a physical.

Favre, however, asked the Packers for his release, a request that the team has denied. The Packers have had discussions with some teams regarding trading Favre, reportedly including the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Meanwhile, Favre denied the Minnesota Vikings had tampered with him as he considered whether to return to play earlier this month. The signal-caller told SI that he talked to Vikings coach Brad Childress and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, but he said he talks to both men and text-messages them often, as well as to other NFL coaches in and out of season.

"I have no qualms about admitting I talked to them," Favre said. "Talking with (NFL vice president of security) Milt (Ahlerich), he said, 'Brett, did they entice you?' I said no, 'I don't need to be enticed anywhere.' They absolutely did not entice me to come to Minnesota."

Favre, 38, is the NFLs all-time leader in touchdowns (442), completions (5,377), attempts (8,758), yards (61,555) and wins (160). He has also started an NFL-record 275 consecutive games, including playoffs.
