Pittsburgh, PA (Best E Casino) - Adrian Gonzalez belted two home runs and Trevor Hoffman set a major league record as the
San Diego Padres downed the
Pittsburgh Pirates, 9-6, in the third contest of a four-game matchup.
Hoffman got the final out in the ninth for his 20th save, making him the first pitcher in major league history to notch 20 or more saves in 14 different seasons. It was also the 544th save of his career.
Josh Banks (3-4) allowed five runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three in 5 2/3 innings for San Diego, which won for just the third time in its last 12 games.
Kevin Kouzmanoff and Nick Hundley also homered for the Padres, while Adrian Gonzalez was 3-for-5 with four RBI.
"We've been swinging the bats, you can see some signs," said Padres manager Bud Black. "We really zeroed in on some hittable pitches, and put great swings on it. We didn't expand the zone, we were patient. We got good pitches to hit. Van Benschoten was command shy, and we took advantage of it."
John Van Benschoten (1-3) was shelled for seven runs on four walks and six hits while striking out two in just 1 2/3 innings for Pittsburgh, which has lost two in a row.
"It's disappointing to lose. It's disappointing as a starter to come out in the second inning," said Van Benschoten. "I got to at least get five or six (innings) for the team, but unfortunately it didn't work out.
Jose Bautista, Adam LaRoche and Jason Michaels all homered for the Pirates.
Adrian Gonzalez's three-run homer gave the Padres the early edge. Edgar Gonzalez and Brian Giles walked with one out in the first inning, and Adrian Gonzalez slammed the homer to right-center field. Hundley made it 4-0 later in the inning on a ground-rule double that scored Chase Headley, who also took a base on balls.
Pittsburgh got a run back in the home first when Ryan Doumit drove in Nate McLouth, who led off with a single and stole second, with a single of his own.
But the Padres tacked on more runs in the second inning. Kouzmanoff's 14th homer of the season scored Giles and Adrian Gonzalez, who reached on a walk and double, respectively, to give the Padres a 7-1 lead.
Hundley and Adrian Gonzalez hit leadoff homers in the third and fourth, respectively, to make it 9-1. Hundley's homer was his first of the season, while it was Gonzalez's 25th homer of the campaign.
Pinch-hitter Michaels drove Jack Wilson home with his fifth-inning homer to make it 9-3.
LaRoche's leadoff homer in the sixth and Michaels' RBI single, later in the same inning, pulled Pittsburgh within 9-5.
After Bautista's solo homer with two outs in the ninth chased Bryan Corey from the game, Hoffman came on for the save.
