(Best E Casino) - After their putrid start, the
Detroit Tigers have rallied back into the thick of things in the AL Central and can continue to gain ground this evening, when they battle the
Chicago White Sox in the second matchup of a three-game series at Comerica Park.
Justin Verlander was a big reason for the Tigers slow start out of the gate, as the hard throwing right-hander opened the year with a pathetic 2-9 ledger with an equally poor 5.05 ERA.
However, since his last loss back on June 6th, Verlander has won six of his previous eight starts, and is a perfect 4-0 in the month of July. The last time the 25-year-old took the hill he dominated the Baltimore Orioles, tossing 8 2/3 innings en route to a 5-1 win. Verlander held the O's to just one run on three hits, while striking out three batters.
The Tigers ace is just 1-2 in three starts against the White sox this season with a lackluster 4.43 ERA. However, the last time he squared off against Chicago Verlander was at his best, limiting the Pale Hose to just one run in nine innings of work.
The White Sox will turn to Jonathan Danks, who will try to rebound from a poor outing against the Kansas City Royals. In the 8-7 loss to KC, Danks was roughed up for six runs on nine hits in just four innings, but despite the poor showing, he did not factor in the decision.
Surprisingly, Danks has been much more effective on the road this season, posting a strong 4-1 mark along with an outstanding 1.92 ERA in nine starts away from U. S. Cellular Field.
Yesterday, Jermaine Dye hit a two-run home run in the ninth to give the White Sox a 6-5 win over Detroit.
Trailing by a run to start the ninth, Chicago had to face Todd Jones on the mound. Jones got the first two batters out, but Carlos Quentin punched a single to right to keep the inning alive. Dye then deposited a 2-0 fastball into the right field stands for a 6-5 lead.
Bobby Jenks then retired Detroit in order in the ninth to seal the win and pick up his 20th save of the season.
Alexei Ramirez went 3-for-4 with a run scored while Orlando Cabrera added a pair of RBI in the win for the White Sox, who have won three straight. D. J. Carrasco (1-0) got the win for getting the final two outs of the eighth inning. Gavin Floyd started on the mound and gave up four runs -- three earned -- on nine hits in six innings of work.
Carlos Guillen hit a solo home run while Curtis Granderson scored twice for the Tigers, who had a four-game winning streak snapped. Jones (4-1) got the loss while Nate Robertson was charged with three runs on five hits in six-plus innings of work.
Chicago has won six of 10 from the Tigers this season after going 11-7 in the season series a year ago.
