Oakville, ON (Best E Casino) - Chez Reavie fired a seven-under 64 on Friday to take the lead during the suspended second round of the Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club.
Reavie finished 36 holes at 13-under-par 129 and leads by two.
Play was suspended Friday night for darkness, but it was a long weather delay on Thursday that set the tournament back. A few players in the second wave of tee times finished their second rounds on Friday, so everyone else will return at 7:30 a.m. (et) Saturday to complete play.
The 36-hole cut will be made and players are tentatively scheduled to go out in threesomes off both the first and 10th tees for the third round.
Eric Axley, one of seven first-round co-leaders, is five-under through 17 holes of his second round and is alone in second place at minus-11.
Nicholas Thompson is also five-under in the second round and at nine-under par for the championship.
Reavie, who also shared the first-round lead when that round finally ended on Friday, parred his first two holes, then recorded back-to-back birdies from the third hole.
Reavie, the 2001 U.S. Amateur Public Links Champion, birdied the sixth to reach nine-under par for the championship. He dropped a shot at No. 8, but got the stroke back with an eight-foot birdie putt at the ninth.
At the par-four 11th, Reavie converted a five-footer for birdie to get to 10- under par. Two holes later, Reavie hit a wedge over the flag for his third and the ball spun back in for an eagle.
"The going into the hole part is a bit lucky, but I was just hoping to hit it close," acknowledged Reavie.
The eagle jumped Reavie to 12-under and he parred the next two. He drained a tricky four-foot par save at the 15th, but birdied 16 to get up to 13-under par.
Reavie had one last good birdie hole, the par-five 18th. He "didn't hit the greatest drive," but still had a chance to get home in two. Reavie's two-iron sailed over the green and he was faced with a severe downhill lie. He pitched his third into a bunker and blasted out to eight feet.
Reavie sank the clutch par save to stay at 13-under and in the lead. He credited the 33 holes he had to play because of Thursday's suspension.
"Fortunately it was a 65 this morning and a 64 this afternoon," said Reavie, who won the 2007 Knoxville Open on the Nationwide Tour. "I got to just keep my momentum and just keep playing all day."
Reavie tied for fifth at the Bob Hope Chrysler Championship earlier this year, but has never come close to contention since. This is his sixth consecutive event and feels like his play has been close to where he wants it.
"I've been hitting the ball real well all year, I haven't been scoring real well, whether it's been putting or making a few birdies and then making a double-bogey or something, I've just lost my momentum," said Reavie.
Billy Mayfair (66) and Steve Marino (67) are in the clubhouse at eight-under 134. Brian Davis and Briny Baird are still on the course at that number.
Carlos Franco (68), Ken Duke (67), Kevin Na (66) and Cliff Kresge (66) are tied for eighth at seven-under 135. Steve Flesch and Kevin Streelman are seven-under, but have not finished their second rounds.
Mike Weir, who shared the first-round lead, is even through his second round with two holes to play. He is part of a group tied for 14th at six-under par.
Anthony Kim. a two-time winner this year on tour and also a co-leader after round one, is two-over through 15 holes and fell into a tie for 26th place at minus-four.
Defending champion Jim Furyk shot a three-under 68 and is in at four-under 138.
