Flushing, NY (Best E Casino) - Pedro Martinez, Carlos Martinez, Aaron Heilman, Scott Schoeneweis and Billy Wagner combined to toss a one-hit shutout to lead the
New York Mets over the
Colorado Rockies, 3-0, in the second game of a three-game set at Shea Stadium.
Jose Reyes posted a solo home run for the Mets, who extended their season-high win streak to eight games. It is the first time that the Mets won eight straight contests since June 7-15 of the 2006 campaign.
Martinez left the game due to right shoulder stiffness and a groin injury. However, neither of the injuries seem to be a major concern as he left for precautionary reasons. Before exiting, he tossed four shutout innings in which he allowed one hit and three walks, while picking up three strikeouts.
Brad Hawpe belted the sole hit for the Rockies, who have come up on the wrong side in 17 of their last 19 visits to Flushing.
"A few balls we hit hard, we hit at people," said Colorado manager Clint Hurdle. "We never really got anything going."
Muniz (1-1) earned the win for the Mets after pitching two hitless innings in which he struck out two, while walking one.
Wagner tossed a perfect ninth, which included one strikeout, to pick up his 22nd save.
Ubaldo Jimenez (4-9) suffered the defeat after allowing three runs on seven hits and four walks in six innings of work. The young Dominican, who also had eight strikeouts, fell to 1-7 in 11 road starts this season.
"He didn't pitch bad at all," said Hurdle.
The Mets failed to collect a hit in the first three innings, but opened up the scoring with a run in the fourth. Carlos Beltran got it going with a one-out double to right and then stole third base to set up an RBI single up the middle by Fernando Tatis.
Reyes led off the fifth inning with his 10th homer of the season to increase the New York edge to 2-0.
Then in the sixth the Mets scored for the third consecutive inning to push their advantage to 3-0. Carlos Delgado led off with a base hit, raced to third on an sacrifice by Endy Chavez and crossed the plate via a Brian Schneider double to right.
