(Best E Casino) - The
New York Yankees return to Pittsburgh for the first time since one of the most crushing defeats in their storied history, as they open a three-game interleague set against the Pirates at PNC Park.
The Yankees have not visited Pittsburgh since the Pirates beat them in the seventh game of the 1960 World Series on a bottom of the ninth home run by Bill Mazeroski, who is expected to throw out the first pitch tonight.
To this day it remains the only Game 7-ending homer in World Series history.
New York was cooled off over the weekend by the Cincinnati Reds, losing two of three to them at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees, though, salvaged the finale of the set on Sunday, as Andy Pettitte pitched six shutout innings to win his third straight start and Jason Giambi drove in two runs and scored twice, lifting New York to a 4-1 win.
Robinson Cano and Jorge Posada also knocked in a run apiece for the Yankees, who had won seven in a row before dropping the first two games of this series.
Heading to the hill tonight for the Yanks will be right-hander Darrell Rasner, who snapped a four-start losing streak in his last trip to the hill on Wednesday against San Diego. Rasner surrendered two runs and three hits in five innings to improve to 4-4 to go along with a 3.64 earned run average.
He has never faced the Pirates.
Pittsburgh will counter with left-hander Tom Gorzelanny, who is 5-6 with a 6.59 ERA. Gorzelanny was tagged with the loss on Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox, as he allowed four runs and five hits in six innings. He also walked four batters.
Gorzelanny received a no-decision in his only other start against the Yanks last season, giving up four runs and six hits in 6 1/3 frames.
Pittsburgh was denied a sweep in its three-game set against the Toronto Blue Jays, falling 8-5 in Sunday's finale. Jack Wilson was 2-for-5 with a run scored and Jose Bautista drove in two runs for the Pirates, who have lost four of their last six games.
Ian Snell lasted just four innings for Pittsburgh, giving up four runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out two in a no-decision. T.J. Beam (0-1), who was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis before the game, took the loss after allowing one run on two walks in 1 1/3 innings.
The Yankees have won all six regular season matchups with the Pirates, sweeping them both times in the Bronx. Pittsburgh is actually the only NL town the Yankees have yet to visit since the inception of interleague play in 1997.
