Philadelphia, PA (Best E Casino) - Casey Kotchman hit a two-run home run as the
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim scored all their runs in the second en route to a 3-2 win over Philadelphia, completing a three-game sweep of the Phillies.
Gary Matthews Jr. drove in a run and scored once for the Angels, winners in four of their last five overall. Chone Figgins and Torii Hunter each went 2- for-4 in the win.
Jered Weaver (7-7) held Philadelphia to a run on four hits in 5 1/3 innings to earn the win -- striking out six while walking three. Francisco Rodriguez avoided trouble in the ninth to notch his major league-best 30th save.
Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins each went 2-for-4 and knocked in a run for the Phillies, who had their season-long losing streak extended to five games. Cole Hamels (7-5) rebounded from a rocky second inning to toss seven solid frames, as he allowed three runs on six hits, with four strikeouts and no walks, but dropped the decision.
After the Phillies stranded men on second and third in the bottom of the first, the Angels got all the offense they would need in their next at-bat.
Vladimir Guerrero led off with a single, moved to second on Hunter's grounder, then came in to score when Matthews delivered a sharp single to right-center. Two pitches later, Kotchman crushed a high fastball off the facing of the second deck in right to open up a 3-0 lead.
The Phillies pulled a run back in the third when Chase Utley broke an 0-for-24 skid with a double to right-center and scored when Howard yanked a single to right.
Hamels settled down to prevent the Angels from pulling away, but Weaver held the Phillies in check before being lifted for Darren Oliver. However, the Phillies struck for a run against the Angels lefty in the seventh. Carlos Ruiz worked a leadoff walk, and after a Pedro Feliz grounder moved Ruiz to second, Rollins hooked a ground ball just inside the third base line and past Figgins' glove for an RBI double.
But Scot Shields came on in relief to fan Utley and pinch-hitter Chris Coste, then worked a perfect eighth. Rodriguez ran into two-out trouble in the ninth when Feliz singled and pinch-runner Eric Bruntlett stole second. However, Rodriguez intentionally walked Rollins to get to pinch-hitter So Taguchi, who popped out in foul territory to end the game.
Philadelphia threatened in the first when Rollins led off with a single and Greg Dobbs followed with a walk. With one out, the pair executed a double steal, but Weaver fanned both Howard and Pat Burrell to escape unscathed.
