Kansas City, MO (Best E Casino) - Ray Durham hit a go-ahead, three-run double in the top of the sixth inning and the
San Francisco Giants scored nine unanswered runs to upend the streaking
Kansas City Royals, 9-4, in the first of three games at Kauffman Stadium.
Matt Cain (4-5) settled down after serving up a three-run first inning, hurling eight innings for the win. The right-hander allowed four runs -- three earned -- on five hits, while fanning eight and walking one.
The Giants had lost five of six coming into the game, but rattled off 14 hits, three coming from Durham. Aaron Rowand doubled twice, scored and drove in a run and Randy Winn went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI.
Luke Hochevar started strong for Kansas City but allowed four runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings of a no-decision. Yasuhiko Yabuta (1-3) took the loss in relief, getting tagged for three runs in just an inning of work for the Royals, who saw their five-game winning streak come to an end.
Jose Guillen knocked in a pair of runs in defeat, while Mark Grudzielanek went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The early four-run deficit didn't faze the Giants. A two-out rally in the fourth started the confidence boost, as Rowand and John Bowker ripped consecutive doubles, the last of which brining in a run. Rich Aurilia followed with an RBI single of his own, and the Royals' lead was cut in half.
A walk and two singles opened the away fifth before Winn brought home a run with a long sacrifice fly to center. A botched double-steal appeared to spoil another big inning, but Bengie Molina recorded a two-out, run-scoring single to tie the game at four runs apiece.
Another two-out rally put San Fran ahead for good. Jose Castillo reached on an infield single and two consecutive walks issued by Yabuta loaded the bases for Durham, who promptly drove a bases-clearing double to the right-field wall off Carlos Rosa.
"[Rosa's] a fastball pitcher," Durham said. "If he throws a changeup, who knows what could have happened? With a fastball pitcher, I've got to be looking fastball."
Winn followed with a double to score Durham and the Giants suddenly led, 8-4. Durham wound up leaving the game after scoring, however, as he apparently suffered a mild sprain to his right ankle on his game-changing swing.
"It was good for [Rosa] to get his feet wet," Royals manager Trey Hillman said, rationalizing his use of the rookie in a key situation. "Difficult circumstances. Difficult situation to put him into, but I felt like it was our best chance to get out of [the bases loaded jam]."
The rest was up to Cain, who after the Royals' third and final run retired 17 of the next 19 batters he faced, not allowing anyone to reach second base.
Rowand added an RBI double in the ninth to punctuate the victory.
The Royals looked poised to run away with another win with a three-spot in the first. Guillen doubled in a pair and Grudzielanek knocked in a run with a single to center.
KC got a run without getting a hit in the third, as David DeJesus waked, stole second, moved to third on Molina's throwing error and scored on a deep sacrifice fly to center.
