Yankee bats aim to give Joba victory versus Padres

(Best E Casino) - The New York Yankees' starting rotation may be something of a mess right now, but the team's offense has more than made up for those shortcomings on the pitching end.

New York will attempt to keep up its impressive recent production and extend a season-high six-game winning streak in today's finale of a three-game series with the San Diego Padres from Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees' potent lineup got the best of Padres ace Jake Peavy on Wednesday, as the reigning National League Cy Young winner was roughed up for four runs (3 earned) over four innings in New York's 8-5 victory.

Alex Rodriguez homered for his fourth straight game and finished 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Yankees' 14-hit attack. Johnny Damon also collected three hits and knocked in a pair of runs, while Wilson Betemit went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

New York has now amassed 37 runs over its last four games and has outscored its opponents by a 43-11 margin during its win streak.

Darrell Rasner (4-4) got the win for the Yankees after giving up just two runs and three hits over the first five innings.

San Diego, which has dropped three straight and four of its last five, received solo home runs from Brian Giles, Adrian Gonzalez and Chase Headley in a losing cause. Edgar Gonzalez delivered two doubles and two RBI on the evening.

The Yankees hope their offensive prowess will help Joba Chamberlain earn his first career victory as a starting pitcher. The converted setup man makes his fourth appearance since joining the New York rotation earlier this month in today's finale.

Chamberlain has recorded three straight no-decisions as a starter but has posted a 2.84 earned run average over that stretch. His last outing was the best of the bunch, as the right-hander held Houston to one run over a career- best six innings this past Friday.

This will be the 22-year-old's first career start against San Diego.

The Padres counter with a young righty of their own this afternoon in Josh Banks. The 25-year-old has been a pleasant surprise since being promoted from the minors in late May, having compiled a 2-0 record and an excellent 1.29 ERA through three starts and a pair of relief appearances.

Banks is coming off his shakiest performance as a Padre, as the former Toronto farmhand surrendered three runs on five hits in a five-inning no-decision at Cleveland on Friday. The Indians' three runs came on a pair of homers, the only ones Banks has allowed in 28 innings with San Diego this season.

Banks did face the Yankees twice in relief during a September callup with the Blue Jays last season and yielded one run over a combined two innings.

The Yankees, who defeated the Padres in the 1998 World Series, have taken six of the eight regular-season matchups between the clubs. San Diego dropped two of three in its only other regular-season visit to the Bronx, back in 2004.
