Mets Cancel Rangers' plans for a sweep in the twinbill

Flushing, NY (Best E Casino) - Robinson Cancel hit a pinch-hit two-RBI single in the sixth inning to break a tie, and the New York Mets held on to beat Texas, 4-2, and salvage a split in a doubleheader with the Rangers.

Cancel had not had a major league hit since September 21, 1999 when he played with Milwaukee, but delivered in the clutch spot for the Mets, who also won the three-game series.

The only game New York lost in the set was Sunday's first game, which Texas won by an 8-7 score after Milton Bradley, Ramon Vazquez and Ian Kinsler all homered for the Rangers.

Pedro Martinez (2-0) got the win in Sunday's second game after he threw six innings, and gave up two runs -- one earned -- on six hits and one walk, while striking out four. Billy Wagner, who had blown his last three save opportunities, worked a perfect ninth inning to earn his 14th save of the season.

"I got in a groove after the second inning," Martinez said. "They got a couple hits and I knew what their game plan was after that so I adjusted. I'm a veteran and I know what to do. I just want to get going normally and get a win and do what we're supposed to do without drama from the relievers and everything."

David Wright went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Carlos Beltran went 2-for-5 with a run batted in for New York.

Texas starter Kason Gabbard (1-3), who was called up from Triple-A Oklahoma to make Sunday's start, went 5 2/3 innings and gave up four runs on eight hits to take the loss -- though he did pick up his first major league hit.

Michael Young and Josh Hamilton each had a hit and an RBI for the Rangers, who have lost three of four. Kinsler had reached base safely in 28 games heading into this contest, but went 0-for-4 with no walks as the streak was snapped.

"He has a plan with everything he does," Young said of the Mets' Martinez. "He settled down and started making pitches and made his adjustments. We're not satisfied. We wanted to take two today."

After getting through five innings without much damage, Gabbard ran into trouble in the sixth, which Beltran began with a single. Damion Easley then doubled to put the runners in scoring position, though Gabbard almost got out of the inning.

Carlos Delgado hit a grounder to short, and Beltran froze along the third base basepath as Young looked him back quickly before throwing to first for the out. Ramon Castro then looked at strike three for the second out before Gabbard intentionally walked Fernando Tatis with Martinez in the on-deck circle.

Martinez had thrown 92 pitches to that point, and retired the side in order in the sixth on just eight pitches, suggesting he could go longer on a day where the Mets' bullpen had already been tapped.

However, Mets manager Willie Randolph opted instead to pinch-hit for his starter, and brought in Cancel. The 32-year-old Cancel had only played in one game this season, and had not had a major league hit in more than eight years.

But Cancel reached out and slapped a curveball back up the middle, just on the left side of the infield, to drive in Beltran and Easley for a 4-2 New York edge.

New York's bullpen, which had given up three runs in the first contest Sunday, shut the Rangers down from there. Pedro Feliciano tossed a perfect seventh, and Duaner Sanchez a 1-2-3 eighth.

Wagner came on for the ninth and got David Murphy to ground out, then struck out Marlon Byrd and Jarrod Saltalamacchia to close out the game.

Texas got on board in the first when Young followed Frank Catalanotto's double with an RBI single. The Rangers added another run in the third on Hamilton's RBI single.

But run-scoring singles from Wright and Beltran in the home third -- both with two outs -- tied the game, 2-2.
