CLEVELAND (AP) -The Cleveland Indians placed All-Star catcher Victor Martinez on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, adding another marquee name to their list of ailing players.

Second baseman Josh Barfield, just called up on Monday, also went on the 15-day DL with a strained left middle finger.

Martinez has an inflamed right elbow, and the Indians gave no immediate timetable for his return. The stint on the DL indicates the ballclub considers the injury much more serious than simply a bout of soreness that could improve with a short rest.

Martinez had an MRI exam Thursday and team trainer Lonnie Soloff was expected to address all of the team's injuries, including Barfield's strained left middle finger.Copyright © 2005 The Associated Press.
