COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -Former NFL coach Sam Wyche felt like a winner again.

The 63-year-old Wyche took the Republican nomination for a Pickens County council seat Tuesday night, defeating incumbent Ben Trotter.

Wyche led Cincinnati to the Super Bowl after the 1988 season. He won the nomination with just over 60 percent of the vote. He'll face a Democratic challenger in November's general election.

Wyche, who also coached Tampa Bay, serves as a volunteer assistant coach for Pickens High. He's also been a substitute teacher at county schools.Copyright © 2005 The Associated Press.
