Mets hope to avoid four-game sweep in San Diego

(Best E Casino) - Pedro Martinez tries to get the New York Mets back to .500 this afternoon, as they try to avoid a four-game sweep at the hands of the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

Martinez returned from the disabled list on Tuesday and got the win in San Francisco, holding the Giants to three runs and seven hits in six innings to improve to 1-0 on the season, while lowering his earned run average to 6.75.

It was just his second start of the year and first since a left hamstring strain cut his season debut short on April 1.

The 36-year-old right-hander has faced the Padres 23 times over the course of his magnificent career and is 10-3 against them with a save and a 3.01 ERA.

San Diego will hand the ball today to lefty Wilfredo Ledezma, who is 0-2 with a 4.43 ERA. Ledezma did not get a decision on Tuesday against Chicago, as he allowed three runs and three hits in 4 2/3 innings of his team's 9-6 loss.

Ledezma has never faced the Mets.

In the third game of this set on Saturday, Scott Hairston hit a leadoff home run in the 10th inning to lead San Diego to a 2-1 win. The Padres have now won four straight games by a score of 2-1, the first time in major league history that has occurred.

In the 10th with Pedro Feliciano (0-2) on the mound, Hairston belted a pitch that just cleared the fence in left field for the win.

Michael Barrett also homered while Mike Adams (1-0) got the win for pitching a scoreless 10th inning for the Padres, who have won five straight against the Mets. Cha Seung Baek started on the mound and gave up one run on seven hits in six innings.

Endy Chavez drove in the lone run while Oliver Perez worked 5 1/3 innings of one-run, four-hit ball for the Mets, who have dropped four of six overall.

A win today by the Padres would give them their first four-game sweep of the Mets since turning the trick in August of 2004 at Shea Stadium.

San Diego won four of six versus New York last year, taking two of three at home. The Mets, who haven't been swept in a four-game set in San Diego in nearly 28 years, have also lost six of their last seven at Petco Park.
