Pittsburgh, PA (Best E Casino) - Brandon Webb earned his major-league leading 11th victory, as the
Arizona Diamondbacks bested the
Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-1, in the opener of a four-game set at PNC Park.
Webb (11-2) was superb in allowing just one run on three hits without a walk over seven innings. He fanned three for his second straight victory after dropping his previous two.
Orlando Hudson, Stephen Drew and Webb each had a run batted in and Brandon Lyon recorded his 13th save of the season for Arizona, which snapped a three- game losing streak.
"The first couple innings didn't have a good feel to them," D'Backs skipper Bob Melvin said. "It seemed the energy picked up as the game went along. I didn't feel Webie (Brandon Webb) had his best stuff early on, but he started getting better as the game went along."
Pirates starter Ian Snell (2-6) allowed only two runs - one earned - on five hits and three walks. The right-hander struck out nine but had 108 pitches through five innings and was lifted from the game. Snell, who hasn't won since April 12, has lost his last five decisions.
Freddy Sanchez had two hits and scored Pittsburgh's only run on Jason Bay's double as the home team snapped a two-game winning streak.
"Its really hard to hit," Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson said of Webb's sinker. "It's there then it's gone. Even when he throws it over the middle of the plate, you end up smoking it into the ground. He's got the best sinker in baseball, by far."
Lyon came on for the ninth and gave up a one-out single to Xavier Nady before getting Adam LaRoche to line out. Pinch-hitter Jason Michaels singled to center to put the tying run on base, but Lyon came back to retire Jack Wilson on a pop-out to end the game.
Arizona put a run on the board in the second. Jeff Salazar worked a leadoff walk, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on Drew's two-out double off the wall in right.
Chris Young tripled off the top of the wall to start the fifth and scored on a Hudson sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 D'Backs.
Franquelis Osoria started the sixth in place of Snell and hit Justin Upton with a pitch to start the frame. Upton moved to second on a groundout and scored on Webb's line-single to center, helping himself to a three-run lead.
Pittsburgh finally got to Webb in the home half. Sanchez laced a two-out single to left and scored on a double to left from Bay.
