Chicago, IL (Best E Casino) - Joe Crede recorded his seventh career 4-for-4 effort at the plate, as his two solo home runs along with Carlos Quentin's three-run blast powered the
Chicago White Sox to a 10-6 victory over the
Minnesota Twins.
Jermaine Dye also homered for the Sox, who have rattled off four straight victories. Orlando Cabrera tallied three hits, while A.J. Pierzynski went 2- for-4 with two RBI and a run scored for the victors.
Javier Vazquez (6-4) was credited with the win, surviving four runs on nine hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings for Chicago, who took the opener of this four-game series.
Minnesota's Nick Blackburn (4-4), who took a line drive off his face in his last outing, was saddled with the loss after allowing seven runs on eight hits in four-plus innings of work.
"It was a rough night for us pitching-wise," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "The ball was flying all over the place. Blackburn didn't make very good pitches, and, more importantly, he didn't make any adjustments."
Carlos Gomez, Alexi Casilla and Michael Cuddyer each homered for the Twins, who dropped two in a row and begin their 10-game road trip with a setback. Joe Mauer added three hits, including two doubles, in defeat.
Minnesota opened the scoring in the third with Gomez's two-out, solo blast to left, and consecutive run-scoring doubles by Mauer and Justin Morneau.
Crede's leadoff homer in the third and Thome's run-scoring groundout in the fourth chipped away at the lead before Chicago took over with a six-run fifth.
Three straight singles opened the inning and Cabrera knocked in Nick Swisher with a single to left. Pierzynski doubled home two and Quentin welcomed reliever Juan Rincon to the game by connecting on his 16th home run of the season, as his three-run blast gave Chicago an 8-3 lead.
Cuddyer's leadoff round-tripper in the sixth was offset by Crede's solo shot in the bottom half.
Dye added to the home run barrage with a solo longball in the seventh to give the Sox a commanding 10-4 lead.
Casilla's one-out, two-run homer in the ninth made things interesting, but Dye made a game-ending diving catch down the right-field line to seal the win.
"All this means is that we won't be swept," Sox manager Ozzie Guillen responded when asked on the importance of the series-opening win. "Our offense did a nice job tonight. We need to be more consistent with the offense."
