Bronx, NY (Best E Casino) - Kyle Davies threw 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball, as the
Kansas City Royals edged the
New York Yankees, 2-1, in the first of a four-game set from Yankee Stadium.
Davies (2-0) allowed seven hits and fanned three batters in his time on the hill. Joakim Soria worked around a single in the ninth to earn his 13th save of the year.
"A-Rod hit his 500th home run off me during my first start at Yankee Stadium, so I don't think it can get louder than that," Davies said. "But it's still tough, those guys are all hitters."
Miguel Olivo had three singles for the Royals, who had lost 11 in a row on the road coming in. Jose Guillen and Mike Aviles each had two hits and scored a run in the win.
Darrell Rasner (3-3) took the loss, despite going eight innings and giving up just two runs on nine hits while striking out four.
Bobby Abreu and Alex Rodriguez each had two hits for the Yankees, who have dropped four of their last six games. Robinson Cano also had two hits and scored New York's lone run.
The Royals made it 1-0 in the fifth inning. Aviles led off with a double and Joey Gathright moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt. David DeJesus brought Aviles home with a single to right field.
K.C. tacked on another in the sixth. Guillen got things going with a lead off double to right-center field. Olivo then put runners on the corners with a single to left and Mark Teahen grounded into a double play, allowing Guillen to cross home.
The Yankees cut the Royals' lead in half in the seventh. Cano cracked a one- out double into right and, two batters later, Melky Cabrera slugged an RBI single to right.
Abreu hit a one-out single in the eighth and, after Rodriguez struck out, Hideki Matsui worked a single to right. Then, on a payoff pitch, Jason Giambi appeared to check his swing but was said to have gone around by home plate umpire Ed Montague, and was called out to kill the rally.
"I haven't seen the replay," Giambi said. "I really love and respect Ed Montague, I've never said anything bad about him. You can't win 'em all."
Soria started the ninth for the Royals and caught Cano looking at the third strike. Pinch-hitter Jorge Posada went down swinging for the second out, but Cabrera finagled a single up the middle. Johnny Damon, who went 0-for-5 to snap his hit streak at 14 games, grounded out to end the game.
