Far Hills, NJ (Best E Casino) - The last sectional qualifiers were held Monday to determine the field for next week's U.S. Open at Torrey Pines.
Some top players made it. Some did not.
Former Masters champion Fred Couples was among the players who failed to make it through the 36-hole qualifier in Columbus, Ohio, that drew most of the top PGA Tour players attempting to qualify.
Couples, 48 and without a win since 2003, finished two shots out of a playoff for the final spots and was later disqualified.
Carl Pettersson was the medalist, posting a 12-under 131 total to finish three shots ahead of Bart Bryant. Davis Love III was also among the players who earned a spot in Columbus, marking his 18th consecutive U.S. Open berth.
Overall, there were 21 spots awarded there on Monday. Two more berths will be determined when Eric Axley, Rickie Fowler and Jonathan Mills return Tuesday morning to finish a playoff that began as an 11-way battle for the last spots.
Also qualifying was Pat Perez, who grew up in the San Diego area playing Torrey Pines.
"That's my home," he said. "That's everything. I've been thinking about that since they came out with it."
Chris DiMarco, father and son players Bill and Jay Haas, former U.S. Ryder Cup captain Tom Lehman and Kevin Stadler were among the other players who failed to qualify in Columbus.
On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, seven players made it through the qualifier at Walton Heath in Surrey, England.
Ross Fisher and Alastair Forsyth shared medalist honors at seven-under 137, with Phillip Archer, Robert Dinwiddie, Ross McGowan, Johan Edfors and Thomas Levet earning the other European berths.
Dinwiddie birdied six of his last eight holes to make it, while Edfors and Levet made it through a four-way playoff for the final two spots.
"It is all about qualifying, not about leading or winning," said the co- medalist Forsyth. "Qualifying is all that matters."
Among those who did not qualify in England were two-time European Tour winner Jeev Milkha Singh of India, 19-year-old phenom Rory McIlroy and three-time Ryder Cup player Paul McGinley.
In Roswell, Georgia, Jason Bohn and Matt Kuchar shared medalist honors and D.J. Trahan earned the third and final spot in a two-way playoff against amateur Ben Martin.
Rich Beem, the 2002 PGA Championship winner, shared medalist honors in Richmond, Texas, with Charlie Beljan for the only two spots awarded at that qualifier.
Two-time major champion Mark O'Meara, now 51 and playing on the Champions Tour, was among five players who earned berths in Lake Forest, Illinois. Kane Hanson and Jonathan Turcott were set to meet in a Tuesday morning playoff to determine the final spot.
David Hearn was the medalist in Beallsville, Maryland, and Brian Bergstol earned the other spot awarded in that qualifier. Bob Gaus won the only berth awarded in Augusta, Missouri.
There were qualifiers held at seven other sites on Monday, and one previously in Japan.
