St. Louis, MO (Best E Casino) - Paul Maholm was stellar on the mound and Luis Rivas clubbed his first career grand slam, as the
Pittsburgh Pirates walloped the
St. Louis Cardinals, 14-4, in the second of a four-game series at Busch Stadium.
Maholm (3-5) gave up one run on four hits in 6 2/3 innings to pick up his first victory since tossing a complete-game gem against Philadelphia on April 27. He had gone 0-3 in his five previous outings.
Freddy Sanchez and Ronny Paulino both belted two-run homers for Pittsburgh, which has won two of its last three games. Xavier Nady drove in three runs, while Jose Bautista finished 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
It was not a memorable first big league start for Mike Parisi (0-2). The 25- year-old lasted only 2 2/3 innings and was roughed up for eight runs on eight hits. A ninth-round selection by St.Louis in the 2004 draft, Parisi was inserted into the rotation after Joel Pineiro was placed on the 15-day disabled list due to a groin strain.
Kelvin Jimenez surrendered five runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings of relief.
Troy Glaus hit a solo home run for St. Louis, which had a three-game winning streak snapped. Aaron Miles and Ryan Ludwick each knocked in a run, while Albert Pujols had two hits.
The Pirates erupted for four runs in the first. A one-out walk to Rivas and consecutive singles by Sanchez and Jason Bay loaded the bases for Nady, who brought everyone home by stroking a double into the left-center field gap. After Adam LaRoche struck out swinging, Bautista lined a single to center to give the visitors a 4-0 edge.
Glaus' third home run of the season put the Cardinals on the board in the bottom of the second, but Pittsburgh blew the game open with five runs in the next frame.
LaRoche drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a single by Bautista and came home when Paulino poked a base hit through the hole on the left side. After Maholm's sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, Nate McLouth was given a free pass to load the bases. Parisi was then lifted in favor of Jimenez and Rivas greeted him by drilling a 1-0 fastball over the left field wall.
Sanchez's two-run blast in the fifth extended the Pirates lead to 11-1. Paulino crushed a two-run shot in the sixth to make it a 13-1 game.
Miles notched an RBI double in the seventh, but the Pirates got the run back in the next frame when McLouth was hit by a pitch while the bases were loaded.
The Cardinals scratched across two runs in the home half of the eighth. Back- to-back doubles by Skip Schumaker and Ludwick plated a run. Brian Barton then reached on an infield single and Rivas' throwing error allowed Ludwick to score.
