Goggin going for wire-to-wire win at Memorial

Dublin, OH (Best E Casino) - Mathew Goggin only managed a one-under 71 on Saturday, but it was enough for a three-shot lead after three rounds of The Memorial.

Goggin finished 54 holes at eight-under 208 and can become the first wire-to- wire winner in Memorial history. It would also mark the first PGA Tour victory for the Australian.

And he's plenty confident.

"You're three in front, you expect to win don't you? I mean, that's what you expect to do," he said. "I guess your expectations rise."

When asked to clarify, Goggin simplified it even further.

"Three shots in front, I do expect to win, yes," Goggin said.

It won't be easy. Aside from a course rivaling a major championship setup, Goggin has a strong group behind him at Muirfield Village.

Kenny Perry, a two-time winner here and overnight co-leader with Goggin, birdied the last for a two-over 74. He is tied for second place with former Masters champion Mike Weir (68), Justin Rose (70), Matt Kuchar (71) and Jerry Kelly (73). The group came in at minus-five.

There was a lengthy weather delay on Saturday, but the field finished round three.

Goggin got off to a sensational start with a 36-foot birdie putt at the first. Perry made bogey at the same hole after visiting a bunker and suddenly Goggin found himself two ahead.

Goggin birdied the third hole to move three clear, but Perry hit a spectacular tee shot to three feet at the par-three fourth.

Then the horn sounded.

It seemed like the stoppage would not last long, but storms stayed in the area. After nearly two hours, Perry stepped up and drained the birdie putt to get within two.

Perry bogeyed the sixth, but got back to seven-under par with a 14-foot birdie putt at the par-five seventh. He trailed by one, but an errant tee ball from Goggin at the eighth led to a bogey and a one-shot lead.

Goggin's lead was padded thanks to Perry. He bogeyed the 10th, then missed an eight-footer for par at 12. Goggin holed a putt from the same length at the same hole to save par and move three ahead.

Goggin drove into the left rough at 14 and could not anywhere near the putting surface. He gave himself a 13-foot look at par, but could not convert.

Perry bogeyed the par-five 15th and Goggin rolled in a four-footer for birdie. That gave him a three-shot cushion over Weir, who had a steady round of four birdies and no bogeys.

Goggin played conservatively on the way in, but it was enough. He will take a three-shot lead into Sunday with a chance at his first PGA Tour victory.

"I'm going to have all sorts of expectations and things are going to go wrong and you just have to try and bounce off it and get through the day," said Goggin. "With a three-shot lead, you have a cushion if things do go horribly wrong."

Nick O'Hern shot an even-par 72 and is alone in seventh at minus-four.

Former U.S. Open winner Geoff Ogilvy (73), J.B. Holmes (70) and Luke Donald (74) are knotted in eighth at three-under 213.

Phil Mickelson, last week's winner at Colonial, fired a two-under 70 and is part of a group tied for 18th at plus-one.
