ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - The Los Angeles Angels are expected to announce they will host the 2010 All-Star game, returning the event to Anaheim for the first time since 1989.
The Angels had long been considered the leading candidate to get the game. Commissioner Bud Selig is set to make it official Wednesday with an announcement at Angel Stadium, the Los Angeles Times reported.
``The city will be getting ready for it - restaurants, businesses, everything,'' outfielder Torii Hunter said before Friday's game against the White Sox in Chicago. ``It's exciting. How much excitement can you have out there? Can you have anymore than what you already have?''
This year's All-Star game will be held at Yankee Stadium and the 2009 event is set for St. Louis. It is expected that future games will be held in Arizona (2011), Kansas City (2012) and the Mets' new ballpark (2013).
The Angels last hosted the All-Star game in 1989, when Bo Jackson led off with a home run for the American League and was the MVP before a crowd of 60,036 at the old Anaheim Stadium.
``That was unreal,'' said Angels manager Mike Scioscia, an All-Star catcher for the Dodgers that year. ``I was making my way down to the bullpen, and all of a sudden, the first pitch is made and he crushed it. It was way up there in center field.''
The game was also played there in 1967.
The team renovated and downsized their stadium after the NFL's Los Angeles Rams left for St. Louis, with seating capacity now listed at 45,257.Copyright © 2005 The Associated Press.
