Pittsburgh, PA (Best E Casino) - Nate McLouth went 4-for-4 and scored three runs as the
Pittsburgh Pirates avoided a sweep with an 8-4 win over the
Milwaukee Brewers in the finale of a three-game set at PNC Park.
Jason Bay added a two-run homer for the Pirates, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Xavier Nady went 2-for-3 with a solo homer, while Chris Gomez contributed with a two-run single. Tom Gorzelanny (4-4) earned the win after allowing two runs on eight hits over five-plus innings, walking four and fanning two.
"Overall today I thought it wasn't my day," Gorzelanny said. "I definitely had to fight through a lot of things, get a lot of dead swings on some good pitches. Fortunately I was able to do that for the most part."
Corey Hart homered for the Brewers, who lost for the sixth time in eight games, while Bill Hall went 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored for Milwaukee. Dave Bush (1-5) was touched for six runs on nine hits in five innings and took the loss.
After Hart's homer put the Brewers on top in the road fourth, the Pirates surged in front by batting around in the bottom half.
McLouth lined a one-out single to center, then Bay launched a two-run shot over the wall in dead center. Bush then hit Nady and Adam LaRoche followed with a single to right. Gomez flew out to left, but Raul Chavez and Gorzelanny picked up back-to-back RBI singles to give the hosts a 4-1 lead.
McLouth helped the Pirates to another run in the fifth, flipping a one-out single into left and stealing second. Bay then grounded out to third, but Prince Fielder tried to throw across the diamond and nab McLouth heading for third and the throw skipped past Hall and out of play, allowing McLouth to trot home. Three pitches later, Nady deposited a handing slider into the seats in right-center.
A leadoff double in the sixth from Hall and a pinch-hit single from Gabe Kapler pushed across a run and chased Gorzelanny, but Tyler Yates came on to prevent the Brewers from pulling closer.
Singles by J.J. Hardy and Hall put Damaso Marte in a first-and-third jam with two outs in the seventh, and pinch-hitter Joe Dillon pulled Milwaukee within 6-3 with a single to right.
But, the Pirates danced away again as singles by McLouth, Bay and Nady loaded the bases against Zach Jackson with one out in the seventh, and after LaRoche struck out, Gomez dumped a two-run single into left to restore a five-run cushion.
Weeks smacked a leadoff homer off John Grabow in the eighth, but Grabow kept the Brewers from getting any more in the frame. Franquelis Osoria finished off Milwaukee with a perfect ninth.
Gorzelanny ran into trouble in the second, as a walk by Hart and a single by Hall, followed by a double steal, put runners on second and third with one out. But, Hart was thrown out at the plate on Bush's grounder to short, then Kendall popped up to end the threat.
Hart made up for it in the fourth, leading off with a line drive homer that just cleared the wall in left. The Brewers then loaded the bases with two outs, but Gorzelanny retired Mike Cameron to avoid further damage.
"We did have some chances that we didn't take advantage of, but (Tom) Gorzelanny, when he's right is tough," said Brewers manager Ned Yost. "He changes speeds and keeps the ball down. He's always been tough on us and makes pitches when he needs to."
