Atlanta, GA (Best E Casino) - Georgia Tech assistant director of player personnel Joe Hamilton, a former star quarterback at the school, has resigned from his position effective immediately.

Hamilton, who took the job under new head coach Paul Johnson on April 28, resigned a day after he was charged with possession of marijuana, driving under the influence and hit-and-run.

"Today, I sadly accepted Joe's resignation," Johnson said. "I know he has great love and concern for this program and always will. Both athletic director Dan Radakovich and I made it clear that we would offer any support he requires in the coming weeks and into the future. Joe will always be a part of the Yellow Jacket family."

According to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the alleged hit- and-run incident took place near the Georgia Tech campus. Hamilton was later pulled over by a police officer who matched his vehicle to the description of the car involved in the collision. The officer smelled alcohol on his breath and Hamilton failed a series of sobriety tests.

The 31-year-old was a four-year starter for the Jackets from 1996-99. In his senior year, Hamilton was named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, won the Davey O'Brien Award as the top collegiate quarterback in the nation and finished second in voting for the Heisman Trophy.
